Default So long for now...

After many trouble-free years of owning our GX, my wife decided she wanted something different. Her request was, "something much faster and unique". After searching for many weeks, we finally arrived at a winner. BMW X5 M

Against my better judgement, we are now a "German car family", lol. The BMW is pre-owned and a CPO unit. So for the foreseeable future we shouldn't have to worry about maintenance costs.

You guys have been very helpful and I have always enjoyed perusing this forum. With luck, I will probably be back here in a couple of years!

Beautiful car, congrats. I just can't handle the multiple trips to the shop regardless if covered or not. "something much faster" from a wife is not a common request

BMW looks good, you gave up some cargo and/or passenger space though. Is that a S6 or S7? My DD is my 21 GX460 and weekend car is a 2013 S4. Thinking of selling my Audi. Although it only has 54k on the clock, I’m getting leery of something major breaking out of warranty.

My Audi is a S8 Plus. An amazing car and I hope to have it for quite some time to come.

I thought about an X5 when I was looking for another SUV to replace my RX. I am also a BMW owner with a go cart on steroids, a 2000 Z3 roadster that I bought new 22 years ago. I guess I have what I need from one end of the spectrum to the other. The Z3 has not gotten much attention since I got my 2022 GX because I just enjoy the big truck ride and still learning about all the bells and whistles that the Z3 does not have. Anyway, good luck and your wife should enjoy the X5.

The BMW X5's are gorgeous. I only can dream of owning a German vehicle.

I simply refuse to put up with the cost of ownership. Nor can I live with it spending a good portion of the time in the shop. And I'm sure everyone will agree that the modern German cars are not going to last as long as the Japanese counterparts.

I'm the type of guy who runs my vehicles into the ground. I will not own a vehicle that won't last at least 200K miles with nothing more than normal wear and tear items to replace.

I’ve owned several German vehicles and currently have an Audi. Ownership out of warranty can be expensive. Still would like to get a Porsche though.

This was a big topic between my wife and I. She seems to forget the issues we faced with her Mercedes SUV. That's what we traded in for the GX. She also seems to have forgotten some of the issues with her previous BMW 5 series sedan.

Her new X5 is a CPO, so maintenance will be cheap and/or $0. But you are correct with the time in the shop. We will see what happens over the next twelve months. Hell is pre-owned vehicle prices continue to rise to stupid levels, maybe we will sell it for a small profit! I am obviously not counting on that, but I've been driving my Audi for a couple of years and I couldn't really tell her no to the BMW. Plus we were cross shopping for Range Rovers...I think we made the better choice between the two (lesser of two evils, lol).

My wife is the same ... but has owned Lexus / Toyota vehicles (daily drivers) for the past 25-years and German cars as non-daily drivers ... but now wanted a Range Rover. She has never once in her life washed her car let alone dealt with anything having to do with servicing. My mistake for enabling. So when she was pushing for a Range Rover ... I said "do what you want, but you can live with the consequence" ... meaning calling AAA when stranded on the side of the road, taking into the dealer yet again for another quality issue and dealing with ongoing maintenance. She changed her mind real quick and bought a new GX460 to replace her GX470.

LOL, that's awesome. When we purchased our GX about five years ago, we also cross-shopped the Range Rovers. Took one for a weekend, CEL!! Took another one for an extended drive, sunroof wouldn't close all the way. Both were preowned, but damn. It was easy to move my wife to the Lexus at that time.

So I was surprised when she wanted to look at them again. We must have looked at ten or more (Range Rover and Range Rover Sport). One has a broken AC vent, one had issues with the front seat belt (wouldn't retract all the way), etc. All this and they were still $10K more than the BMW X5M we bought.

Just put aside $500 a month for maintenance and make sure to get rid of it long before 100K miles

For me it's all about purchasing a "Purpose Built Vehicle" ... designers that have a sharp focus on the performance characteristics where the vehicle will excel over any alternative in that category. This is where the Lexus GX460 rules ... while having stellar reliability ... a rare combination.

The pretend SUV market for me makes absolutely no sense ... something that may have a combination of "features" that are appealing ... but completely lose sight of the design purpose of the vehicle from a pure performance standpoint. Using BMW crossovers as a convenient example ... the end result seems to be the end product of BMW marketing (ignoring the engineers) saying "let's take a proven world class performance vehicle platform (the 3-Series or 5-Series sedans) ... lift it 2-inches, change the body to "look like" an off-road vehicle ... and ruin the overall performance, handling, aerodynamics and gas mileage so we can cater to the "pretend off-road vehicle market".

I continue to praise Lexus / Toyota for being dedicated to a platform (GX / 4-Runner) that provides world-class (off-road) performance in a category that has been taken over to where the term "SUV" and "Off-Road" are long gone from being synonymous.
