Default Reliability vs 470

So I'm at the point where I'm likely going to buy either a new base 460 or possibly a 2 - 3 year old CPO depending on the deals I can find. The legendary reliability of the 470 is well known. My question is, how does the 460 stack up when compared against the older model? I'm not necessarily looking for a "things to look for" type of list as this sight already has those. I'm really just looking for an idea of whether the 460 is less, just as, or more reliable than it's predecessor. Thanks!

Its essentially the same vehicle with more refinement so you're answering your own question in lot of ways.... There are minimal functional differences between a new base 460 and a 2-3 yr old CPO one or one from 2011 for that matter... cosmetic appearance items aside.
I consider the 4.6 an evolution of the 4.7... it's also in the Tundra in massive numbers as is the A760F tranny so the powertrain is time tested and rock solid.

A few IMO thoughts

- Overall I believe AVS/RAHC is pretty reliable but that will be one less thing to go wrong on that "base" 460. All 470's had that system stock. Obviously that can be swapped out though.

- The 8.2" rear diff in 460 is reportedly a strength upgrade. I've seen many on GXOR upgrade to this as aggressive and perhaps some careless mistakes off-road can detonate the 8" in the 470

- Water pump leaks in 460... probably don't see it much in 470 since it is part of the 90K mile timing belt replacement

- Near 1 million mile example of a 1UR-FE in a '10 Sequoia. Same 4.6L as in GX. Just shows you 1UR-FE has same potential of high mileage as the 4.7L (2UZ-FE)

- Same transfer case in 460 (36100-6D401) as the '03-'09 V8 and '10-'20 Limited 4Rs. Basically the same unit as 470 model except for how it is engaged electronically versus the handle

- A760F (460) is reportedly almost the same as A750F (470) except the extra 6th gear

- SAIP issues (aside going bypass) are easier to fix on the 460

- 460 brake calipers are seen as superior and will bolt onto a 470. I've seen many upgrade those

- Frame strength improvements (post #11)

Looks like you are solely looking at reliability differences so I will leave out option differences.

460 has a lot of advantages going for it, a lot of it due to simply being a generation newer. IMO it is all around a substantially better vehicle, though you will pay more money, so perhaps not a substantially better value.

If you read 470 forums/groups you will find there is virtual laundry list of little quirks and issues that owners deal with. A lot of them are minor or cosmetic, and some are due to wear, etc. that will eventually happen to 460s. But a lot are bugs that seem to have been worked out/avoided on the second generation.

460 definitely has issues, just not as common. Secondary air injection issue is the biggest one I can think of.

Comparatively though 470 owners groups tend to read more like guys keeping their old cars going, and it has been that way for awhile. Definitely was the case when I was shopping for my GX about 4-5 years ago.

Thanks for the input. On my way to pick up a 21 nebula gray premium right now. Hope it lasts longer than I do!
