If it is the floor shifter mechanism doesn't look too hard to replace but can't remember one of those going out on a 460. IIRC... 470 had some issues with that part.

The other trusted mechanic I called said the same thing... "I don't recall those shift kits going out much at all." As an avid Toyota Owning friend of mine said, "They may find it is something else and replace it too. Long and short is you will end up with NEW PARTS."

Default GX460 transmission engages hard/abruptly

Hi,
I own a 2013 GX460, and the transmission engages a bit rough. Aside from when the transmission first engages, it operates flawlessly. As an example, when I back out of my driveway and shift into drive, there is a bit of lag, then I can feel the transmission engage. If I keep my foot on the brake, the engagement is hardly noticeable, though it takes an oddly long time to shift from R to D. However, if I were to shift into drive and attempt to accelerate before the lag is worked out (even very lightly), the transmission engages very harshly and lurches forward. I've never had this issue with an automatic trans before, and it's kind of hard to explain. Has anyone else experienced this, or is this normal for a GX?

Also, it was like this when purchased from a dealership, and my mechanic hasn't commented on it. At this point, I assume that it's normal, but I find it to be very annoying, so I'm hoping something can be done to fix it.

Thanks for any help/suggestions/recommendations.

How steep is your driveway and the street you backed into?

Does the 2013 have the 2nd gear start mode to try that?

The issue occurs every time I shift into drive, regardless of the surface or incline.

I'm not familiar with that, so I'll look into it. Thanks!

Mine does the *exact* same thing! I did a complete ATF flush, no change. When I took it in for the recall, I asked them to check it. They said it was normal, so I just live with it.

My 2019 GX460 does exactly the same since new. Never experienced this before on any Toyota / Lexus ... and I have owned a GX470, four (4) 4-Runners, an FJ Cruiser and a Sequoia.

Ours exhibits this behavior sometimes.. we have to back out of our garage 100% of the time, so when doing this I've discovered if I dont move the shifter until the car is completely stopped and my foot on the brake then it will shift smoothly... if I move the shifter from R before the vehicle is completely stopped and my foot isnt pressing down hard on the brake pedal, then it lurches a bit into D once it engages. I dont have a problem performing this behavior but my wifey is a bit impatient so it often lurches for her when I'm in the passenger seat... try being completely stopped with foot hard on the brake before moving the lever, then slowly let off the brake pedal, should be smooth engagement.

I’m having this exact issue, shifting from Park to drive is slightly grabbing and the “D” never illuminates when it’s acting up and while driving without the D lit up the 4lo starts blinking. I heard it’s a nightmare prying off. Was told the issue is corrosion inside so PB blaster doesn’t seem to improve condition.

good news is now there is a CEL so should be able to pull codes with regular OBD2 reader, will report back with codes. Leaning toward the neutral safety switch/selector assembly part # 84540-35060.
