Hey all, as I've posted about before, I am in the search for my next vehicle and the '14+ GX is on my short list. That being said, I think one thing that is often overlooked during the shopping process is storage compartments and spots for random stuff. I keep a fair amount of "preparedness" gear in my car at all times: tow straps, ratchet tie downs, mechanics toolkit, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, bungee cords/rope, etc and currently have them all stuffed into a "cargo organizer" which a) looks terrible and b) takes up a considerable amount of room in my trunk.
Any good storage compartments or free space spots in the GX that can accommodate random knick knacks that we tend to all keep in the car? Appreciate anyone's take on the matter, thanks in advance!
I keep a small air compressor and bungee wedged inside the little door where the factory jack is. You could in theory stuff a lot of things in there but it's not really made for storage. Also in the back door there is enough space for a basic first aid kit, but it has to be relatively flat. It's also basically all going to fall out everytime you open the door, too. I keep some quickclot gauze and a tiny first aid kit back there.
For trips I do what you do and have a bag or small box with gear.
On the rear hatch compartment, right side on the door, I actually found it is the perfect spot to stow an army surplus tri-fold shovel (e-tool) bare by itself without the plastic carrier. It fits perfect and comprises the "shovel" part of my recovery gear. On the same door I keep a skinny mini tool kit (maybe 3 inches by 2 inches by 11 inches) with jhst the absolute basics like 8-15mm sockets & driver, few open/closed enders, pliers, baling wire, electric tape, bulbs etc). It wraps together as a solid rectangular mass and fits on the door near the e-tool. IIRC it was a basic crappy toolset & case bought for my wife's old car at Marshalls for $10. Garbage set but GOOD for the case fitting the door in this vehicle.
I keep an IFAK in the armrest and numerous other items jammed under the 2nd row seats encased in tightly fitted plastic bags. I find those clear zippered bags that pillow case/sheet sets come in are durable enough and "eye pleasing" enough to pass my & the wifey"s test for not looking horrendous unlike grocery store bags.
i also have a piece of 2x4 wood as a jacking point/tire gripper under the folded 3rd row (quite a bit of space there but I still need to get creative with a eye-pleasing encasement). This is probably the biggest spot for gear that's tidy
Thanks, guys. Good to know I'm not the only one here with the preparedness mentality w/regards to gear I keep at the ready. Chances are I'll never need any of it but that one time I do I'll sure be glad I have all that crap handy lol.
