Step 1: remove the the small triangle plastic cover from the door where covers mirror holding bolts. All you need is the trim remove tool which is held only by clips
Step 2: using the trim remove tool to remove the window switch panel, soft arm rest piece on the door panel, a small plastic cover behind door handle. Discount the wire harness*
Step 3: remove two screws (one behind door handle, one behind arm rest piece) which hold the door panel
Step 4: remove the door panel by pulling the panel from the bottom, then work your way up from the side. It has about 14 plastic clips to hold the panel, for the first time, you may need a little bit of force, which is normal
Step 5: lift upwards to the panel to remove it. You have the option to disconnect the door locking cable to remove the panel completely, but for mirror replacement, you can just leave it, as long as you can access the cable harness for the mirror where is located in front of the door handle
Step 6: discount the mirror control wire harness, remove three bolts for the mirror
Step 7: put everything back in reverse order. To make your job a little easier, when you put door panel back, first remove the top piece of the door panel (where against window glass, which is held by metal spring clips), then insert this piece on top of the door panel first, then put back the rest of door panel
That's about to it. Take your time and it's not that difficult to do.
I was able to replace the mirror. Glad the engineers decided to run the connection down into the door instead of having it connect where it would be accessed under the triangle panel instead of a connection deep on the inside of the door. It was tight and had lots of clips. Some came out and had to reinstall them to put the door back on. Mirror works and looks great now. Glad to be a member of the forum. I hope to learn more about this nice new SUV.
We (okay, not me) tweaked the passenger side mirror when backing out of the garage. The housing and blinker are both cracked but fully functional. However, the mirror automatically extends past the driver's viewpoint each time we start the car.
Questions:
1) Is there a way to disable the auto extension of the mirrors when we start the car? I think the mirrors only extend if they are out of "normal" position. However, our mirror thinks the normal position is further out than is useful. It then extends the mirror too far each time. We have to manually pull the mirror housing back to its regular position after we start the car. You can adjust the mirror glass but the housing is swung out too far. Hassle....
2) We can replace the whole mirror for about $520 plus the housing itself which is about $70. Has anyone done this replacement themselves with either new parts or salvage parts? (BTW, the salvage parts don't seem to save much $$ compared to the OEM new cost). I am also entertaining having a local and excellent body shop do the mirror replacement work with my parts. I figured they repair more side mirrors than the dealer and they are probably more affordable.
Thank you for any reflections you have on our mirror problem,
Jim

Yes, the mirror glass adjustment switch moves the mirror glass in but not far enough for the driver to see properly. The folding switch moves the entire housing all the way closed against the car or all the way open (too far for the driver).
It seems the mechanism for the positioning was broken. You may have to replace the mirror. To do so, you will have to remove the door panel, and the triangle piece where covers three bolts which held mirror housing in place. To remove the door panel, there are quite few posts here that you can search for. Not that difficult, but just take time.
