Same thing happened for my 15 gx460 at 19k miles and was covered under warranty. The price quoted was similar as what my SA told me. Cheap parts and fluids but many labor hours.

Good luck.

i had the exact same issue on our 14 when i bought it with 45k on it. thankfully it still had the factory powertrain warranty. that leak should have been visible without taking any skids off. i noticed the leak on mine just by shining a flashlight under the car. although my repair was free, the dealer had it 4 days and had to completely pull the TC and reseal it.

i wouldnt say this is a pervasive issue, but it didnt take me long to find quite a few mentions of it on these forums. my service advisor also commented that it was fairly common.

Something like this isn't covered under the drivetrain warranty?

It's covered under powertrain warranty but only up to 6 yrs 72k miles. Mine (2014 model) had the same leak discovered through PPI when I was buying mine last summer (44k miles at the time of purchase), and Lexus fixed it under warranty.

Default 2010 120k Transfer Case Leak

Hi All I bought a new to me 2010 120k GX460 in WA. I love it! I checked the carfax and it’s clean, also looked at the service history and it was good, no mention of transfer case leak.

Today I took it to a shop to have the parking brake adjusted. They noticed the transfer case is leaking fluid. they are charging me $1500 to fix it. Is that reasonable? Is this urgent? Can I use my Autonation warranty to cover it since it’s drivetrain? Any advice is appreciated!

TIA!

This seems to be a somewhat common occurrence. Mine was leaking at 50k and thankfully fixed under factory power train warranty. They had to remove the case, split it entirely, and reseal it. So yes, $1500 sounds about what I’d expect. And depending on the rate of the leak and considering it’s a full time 4WD vehicle, i’d consider it somewhat urgent. However, maybe another Indy shop could do it cheaper

Thank you for the replies, super helpful.

One concern I had was that this vehicle is 10 years old and has 120K miles on it... to my untrained eye the fluid that is allegedly leaking looks quite clean. Could this be some other liquid? Could it not be a leak?

I do plan on addressing this soon -- will be replacing fluids (eg. diff, trans, brake, power steering) on the vehicle as well over the coming months as this is a new-to-me vehicle.

Default Is this bad ?

So my truck is at the local dealer for fuel pump recall... i got a whole list of things that i need like $95 dollar air filter lol. But 1 of the things on the list is this tcase leak which I've heard of with the GX. Heres the pics and description they sent me i would like to know if this is bad and should be fixed or could i just keep topping it off once a year and keep it going.

In order to check the fluid level you have to get under the truck and undo a bolt. There is no level indicator or dipstick.
The transfer case will damage itself if the fluid is low or runs out, even if it's not locked or in use. It's technically in use all the time since the gears are always meshed.
If you have the money and are keeping the GX, get it fixed, but an independent tech will probably do it for less than the dealership.

Did you ever figure out what the culprit was for your problem? I am having the same issue with my 570. No other errors or signals, just randomly have the 4lo start flashing while driving.

Thank you for your reply, just one day? that's fast. I went to the dealer nearby me and made an appointment Monday, the service advisor told me it will take 3-5 days.
