Default Navigation update

I got the email that my 2011 GX navigation update is available for the discounted price of $99. Went to the local dealer which said that they have to download the update onto the USB drive which takes about 2 hours and $200 from my in addition to the price above. Is that correct? I thought the Nav update could be done by the owner?

It has to be done with the dealer's Techstream computer. That USB only contains the key not the actual map data. Starting in 2010, Lexus went to a hard drive based nav computer. Before that, the map data was read off of a disc which you could replace yourself.

Thank you for responding. Would a service tech spend 2 hours doing this one thing?

No. That is ridiculous. Likely takes 20 minutes.

I called my local Lexus dealer. I was quoted $282 and it will take about 1hour to install. I would guess 20 minutes also but they probably never estimate anything under 1 hour.

Here's another reference price for ya, my dealer is charging $99 (nav key, software) + $124 (install labor) + tax.

Call beforehand, because the updates have been hard to get ahold of so far. They'll probably hold one for you if you set up an appointment.

I had my 2010 GX460 Navigation System updated yesterday with the 2015 Version.

The Thumb Drive cost $185 and the installation was $208. It took 2 hours including the time it took them to wash the car.

Did you sit there and wait on it?

Aren't all the maps stored on SD cards, inserted under the volume ****? Or is that just 2014+ models?

@jtrue28, The map being microSD based is only for 2014+ models (and all other Toyota vehicles equipped with gen 8 navigation systems). The gen 6 navigation system (2010-2013) is not microSD based, rather it is hard drive based, and the map updates have to be loaded via USB using TIS Techstream. I do not know how updating the maps on gen 8 systems works.

What is the difference in the maps between Generation 6 and Generation 8 ??

The maps are the same. What is different is HOW the maps are installed. The latest models install the maps through a SD memory chip - like you'd use in a digital camera or phone.
