I currently have a 2004 4Runner V6 4X4, and a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4X4 (MT), and currently craving a V8. I was initially looking at used LX470's, but the ones I encountered had some sort of mechanical issues. I figured I'd look at the GX's. I may even consider a GX470. But how are the 460's modification wise? I saw the GX460 lift thread, but couldn't recall if that 460 was a base or premium model. I noticed in my research that there is very few modification parts (bumpers, roof racks, etc.) in the last 3 years that the vehicle has been out. If anyone has had a 4th generation 4Runner, could you tell me about how roomier it is too? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Well probably the base since it doesn't have the air suspension or dampening. Other than that little things like a heated steering wheel won't have much affect on mods between base and premium
I owned a loaded V8 05 Limited 4Runner and the GX has about the same amount room (actually a little more). The difference is how much more comfortable it is. It also rides better, smoother and quieter. Also, you have a third row seat at the push of a button which is much more versatile and convenient. The GX470 is closer to the 4Runner then the GX460. The 460’s drive train is much better, more powerful and better on fuel. Lexus pretty much improved just about every aspect of the GX. As far which would be better to mod, I would say the 470 first (because it been around longer) and between the base and premium, the base model has less high tech suspension electronics. To be honest, the GX is not a very good vehicle to mod, period (either 460 or 470)! Even though a STOCK GX is very capable off-road (as good as the 4Runner, or better) it is a low volume expensive luxury vehicle. Not many aftermarket parts are even available. Example, to this day, no one even makes an exhaust system for it! If your intention is frequent off-roading, the GX would be limited to easy to moderate roads unless you take the running boards off, lift it and slap on some better tires. You could use a 4Runner lift (on the base model) and could possibly get a locker and maybe a custom set of sliders.
Thanks for the information guys! I honestly would have jumped to the 5th generation 4Runner, but Toyota didn't give it the V8 and only kept the torsen 4wd system on its limited model instead of all 3 trims. The 4th generation V6 4Runner and FJ I have were before the woman and kids came along. I need the V8 to haul them, and their things around, and I will eventually tow a camper in the future also.
The Sequoia is too big, and the Land Cruiser is out of my price range, so I thought I would check out the GX since it's basically a Prado. I may have to work with a base model in the future as the upgrades I will be doing will be mainly suspension related. But again, thank you for the information and advice.
this is not a mod friendy suv period. i would look at a 4R if u want to do that.
oh idk about that. Pretty much everything drivetrain and suspension wise transfers over. Also, the gx460 is essentially a land cruiser prado which has a lot of aftermarket support overseas.
