Hi all. I have my sights set on a used GX. Hoping to find the sweet spot of mileage <150K and cost less than 15K. Finding a lot at dealerships in the Northeast and Florida. I found a rather clean 2010 has 126K miles down in Florida, but the rust under has me concerned.
So, question is, given my price point, how much rust is acceptable? I most likely will drive this into the ground, but I said that about my Pilot, and it is struggling to haul what I want to pull. Images attached.
Really appreciate any insight here! Thanks in advance!
... mechanical parts can be replaced ... surface rust can be mitigated ... once crossing the line into rust-cancer, and rust perforation for me it's an absolute nogo.
That does look concerning. I have a 2010 with 160,000 mi that spent its life in Pennsylvania. I replaced that front metal guard with grates because it was so rusted. I'm looking to do same with gas tank shield which is pretty rusted (but soaked with Fluid Film/Surface Shield) There was also minor rust elsewhere. But those two (replaceable) items seemed to take the worst beating. I agree the black spray paint is concerning. But if it was lame attempt to hide surface rust, it may not be deal killer. All said, I would want to look it over thoroughly in person. It's good advice to find the best specimen possible.
I've owned a 4th gen V8 4Runner and now a GX460 while living in rather unforgiving environments like Alaska and Alberta, so my tolerance for *some* surface frame rust is higher than many, but I wouldn't touch your example with a ten foot pole. It's a bad situation made worse by someone trying to make it look better than it is. And if it looks like that in the places you can see, imagine what it might look like in the hidden corners you can't put eyes on.
Pass, there will be other cleaner examples that come up.
from the photos it looks good to me, but thats from a quick glance at a photo. try a ball peen hammer see the integrity in places that are suspect and reachable.
a good spot to check on some years is where the ac tube drips onto the frame. known to rust a lot there.
Ya, that looks pretty normal to me. I'm going to start spraying mine with fluid film yearly. I used to scrap and paint but that seems to just fail any maybe cause more issues. You can buy that stuff by the gallon and a sprayer for $100. Many are doing this!
