Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have 23 GX460 and am looking into extended warranty options. I am reading posts about GX460 having potentially expensive repairs (valley plate leaks, radiator leaks, timing chain cover leaks, and transmission solenoid failures needing a new transmission). From my understanding, Lexus never fixed any of these issues. I thought the GX was bulletproof like my 4runner, but I guess not. Some have posted about purchasing a Toyota platinum warranty at a cheaper cost than from a Lexus dealer. Do you have any recommendations on coverage? Will the Toyota warranty bought from a Toyota dealer cover my Lexus Gx? Has anyone got a better price from Lexus for extended coverage?
23GX, I'm in the GX460 "bulletproof" cult. I currently own three- a '16 Prem, a '21 and '23, both of which are Prem+ Sport Design. Had another '16, but traded that one in on the '21. Never had any of the maladies on any of them that are mentioned in your post. I know they exist, but based on my personal experience and the reports and reviews of the "Care Care Nut", one of the premier Lexus/Toyota YouTube experts, it seems like lack of regular scheduled maintenance and super high mileage are the affected GX 460's. (by the way, he felt so strongly about the quality of the GX, he bought his wife a '23, the last of the second generation, out of his own pocket.) But, if an extended warranty gives you peace of mind, go for it.
Thanks for sharing your experience, which is reassuring. I was surprised to read about the commonly mentioned issue with the GX engine ( valley plate leaks, radiator leaks, timing chain cover leaks, Transmission solenoid failure, and commonly around the 100k mile based on the posts). Maybe to your point, lack of maintenance. I follow the " Car Care Nut" and know of his GX. I still have some years of warranty coverage, which I will have to see. If these so-called common issues occur, the cost of an extended warranty may make sense because the dealer quoted me $3500 for a valley plate leak I just happened to ask when getting 1st service. What mileage did you drive your GXs, and what maintenance schedule did you follow to avoid these issues? I will be changing the oil 5k intervals, trans at 30-50k, and coolant at 30k miles. Another YT guy is "GX460 off-road." he uses his GX as it was meant.
My '16 has around 110,000 on it. If I clicked off the odometer and gave you the keys, you wouldn't know if it had 20,000 or 120,000 on the clock. I change ALL fluids @ 50k, with the exception of regular oil changes 5-7,000 miles. I did the same with my 2010 Tahoe, which was the only other vehicle I owned with well over 100,000. While it served me very well and later my son between driving 30 miles RT to HS in ugly snowy conditions and away at college for seven of the 11 years I owned it, overall, the GX is a much tighter and higher quality vehicle than the Chev.
I wouldn't own a GX 550 or an LX600 without an extended warranty. Unless there are some significant changes in the 550, I may never own one.
Forgot to answer...the '21 has about 35,000 miles, the '23 only about 19,000.
Agreed with the GX550, I do not like it unless it grows on me over time. Plus, I don't think the price is warranted, the interior looks and feels cheap and not a proved platinum.
If by 'bullet proof' one means that none of these things happen if you do the maintenance, then they are not bullet proof. Reliable, yes. Repairable, yes, but not bullet proof. Very few catastrophic issues. So because there are not a ton of issues that come up, in almost all cases it will be well worth it to repair the issue. So the line where it is good money after bad get pushed way out relative to most other cars.
I am not sure extended warranty is really gonna be worth it if you have a 2023 tbh. That is a long time out before any of these issues might hit you (and of course they may not happen at all). I think for CPO's that are close to the max age (I think 6 years) it can make sense to consider an VSA extension to the CPO. Having had two previous CPO Lexus, all bought at 6yo with around 50-60k I had experience with repair costs in years 9-12 in the age of the cars. I used that experience to calc what I think would be reasonable to pay for a 3 year extension to the 2 year CPO. I was able to get that price. The main items I have had done under that warranty 1) Radiator replaced (they threw in replacing the serpentine belt); 2) Water Pump; 3) Timing Chain Cover Leak; 4) Radio (not the head unit, just the radio) was replaced; 5) All 5 TPMS sensors. There were a few other minor items, that were niceties but not really a reason to get an extension (They delt with a few rattles in the front drivers and passenger windows - I thought it was regulator but that turned out fine and they replaced the drivers sun shade that was drooping). I had easy $6k+ in repairs done under warranty. Of course maybe if I didn't have the warranty some of those I wouldn't bother to fix (like the radio, the droopy sun shade). Or maybe that cost would have been a bit lower at an indy repair. Also keep in mind that the bulk of those hit at 100k miles and at or after year 10 of the car's life - so unless the warranty extension is going to reach that late into the GX's life, not sure that even if you unfortunately have any of the those issues it will happen during the coverage period.
FWIW, I take it in to the dealer around every 6 months for oil changes etc (even though they insist 1 year/10k is enough). The GX had a full service history at the dealership that I bought if from and have it serviced at. I also only use premium fuel from top tier gas stations (ok - maybe 5 times I filled up at HEB - but most of the time only at top tier).
Hey @23GX460P we are retailers of Fidelity Platinum extended warranty coverage, repairs accepted at all Lexus dealers or licensed repair facilities in the US/Canada. The link below will be all we need to get you accurate pricing and coverage information. Talk to you soon!
Troy Dietrich? He sells Fidelity Warranty coverage under a different name, It is the same 3rd party coverage coverage we retail and I've mentioned above.
You don't need to buy an Extended warranty today. Just purchase one before the factory 4 year one expires
I would only purchase Toyota / Lexus warranty's. Not 3rd party ones.
^^^ ... this ... all about the underwriter in the small print at the bottom of the policy ... with many providing coverage not worth the paper it's written on.
I would only do a factory extended warranty, and my advice is to not even do that for this generation of GX. Just put the money in the bank for potential repairs and roll the dice. If this was say an Audi or Mercedes (or pretty much anything European luxury) I'd say get the extended warranty if you plan on keeping it.
I've mostly heard good things about Fidelity, they clearly have decided to market themselves heavily on many automotive forums, but I will always be deeply skeptical of aftermarket warranties.
I have a good friend that bought an aftermarket warranty from his Acura dealership (not Fidelity) and his engine went out. It's actually a big issue and eventually became a class action lawsuit. The aftermarket warranty would only put a junkyard engine in it. And fought him all along the way. Had to rent a car for 1-2 months, etc. Nightmare.
We are a factory-authorized retailer for all of the makes listed below. We do NOT sell any 3rd party, or non-factory backed plans.
Yes, then click "Toyota", and it brings you directly to a Fidelity brochure, and Fidelity Warranty Services is listed on their references.
This goes into something I've tried explaining to four members in past, Fidelity is the South East Distributor of all Toyota vehicles for the United States, and the Fidelity Extended Warranty contract the same coverage bought at a Toyota/Lexus dealership, however we are not running under any different names like the other guys.
