Default Alternator needs to be replaced.

Hi all. Dealer wants $1700.00. I am looking for a second opinion. I have just over 86k miles on 2018 Premium model.

Your price is $430 at Bell, MSRP is $581 which is what dealer should be charging. $1119 for labor sounds like a lot but a search indicates that the SM says the radiator needs to be removed to do the job.

In this thread there is mention of replacing it w/o removing radiator. https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/201...ement.1079244/

Unfortunately the radiator has to get removed so that's a good amount of labor hours right there.. Though I paid about a tick under $900 at a Toyota dealer.

Thanks for your replies. The price I got was $575 for the part and the rest labor.

You don't need to drop the radiator to replace it, there's an easier way where you drop the sway bar.

$1700 is a sky high quote in my opinion, but that might just be what the book says and so that's what they can charge. But someone that's done a few of these could probably bang it out in an hour.

I would just make sure it's the alternator, 86k miles is somewhat low for an alternator replace on this Lexus. I would hope the battery has been tested and is not the culprit.

HI BradTank, thanks for your suggestion. The battery was tested and found to be ok. It's only a couple of years old. This SoCal dealer charges $225 an hour labor. Same amount for diagnostics.
I'm considering Bell Lexus for the part and an indie my son knows for instal.

I think that's a good plan. An indy shop can easily handle this job. $225 an hour is steep.

You can also get a Denso remanufactured alternator that's an OEM for cheaper, but if it were me, I'd buy a new one from an online dealer. If it were easy to get to, I'd get roll the dice on a remanufactured one, but it's a lot of labor to get to this one.

Do it yourself for $150 with a remanufactured Denso.
