Hello all,
New to this site. Bought a 2018 Lexus GX 460. When I go uphill or change from drive to the gear side going uphill, the car gets a strange gas or burning smell. Is this normal for a Lexus?
No. If you just bought it, was it recently undercoated? I have seen used cars with fresh undercoat for sale, to hide the rust. Often the undercoat overspray ends up in the exhaust and it burns off.

It means, when I change from D, to D3 or D4 going uphill it get a burning or gas smell. No new undercoat.

Why would you do this? Just let the transmission decide on its own. With that said, this has nothing to do with the smell,
On the smell, it is not normal. But it could be an oil leak at the cam towers which then drip onto exhaust manifolds. This is a common problem on this engine and an expensive fix. First thing to do is remove the skid plates and look for leaks. Both oil and coolant. Coolant often leaks from valley plate and drips to lower part of engine,
How expensive are we talking?
I did get an extended service warranty.
The common leak areas on this engine are front cover, cam towers (oil) and valley plate (coolant) Each repair is several thousand or more. Perhaps it is simple less invasive like valve cover gaskets which is a much cheaper repair.
There are lots of old threads here so you might want to search the forums.
Also here is a video of fixing the common leaks on this engine. Not a GX but a UR-FE engine family like the GX.
