2007 GX 470 low 39,000 mikes smoke coming from alternator, battery lights flashing along with other idiot lights. 2 year old batter died and became hot even when not attached. Replaced batter and when battery attached, engine off, smoke and burning electrical smell from alternator. When start engine, whining sound from alternator. only let run 1 minute. scary. Disconnected new battery right away. Has this been a problem for GX 470? Proud GX owner.

Sounds like the diodes have gone bad. Get the alternator replaced. Get it towed to the shop if you aren't going to DIY it.

Alternators do go bad, but from what I've seen there isn't a time limit or mileage limit for when it happens.

My guess the alternator is bad.

Bummer that it should happen with low miles. Not expected with Lexus or Toyota. I hope I can get a smokin deal to repair it given our history with Longo Lexus. Thanks for your info and support.

Sounds like the old battery damaged alternator, with replacement battery it finished alternator in turn alternator killed the battery. Alternator can put out even 100 volts when it is bad(no voltage regulation) If not sure of DIY, visit specialty shop.
