Never seen that before, what's going on with the bushing in that end piece that broke off? Can you post a better pic of that?

There is some play somewhere. When you replace the strut, something is causing the axle to have the extra movement allowed to hit the base of the strut. This did not happen overnight. You probably got used to driving it an d did not notice the issue. Do not just remove an d replace the strut! It will be broken also!

Agree. Something is very loose under there. Look for worn/gone bushings, or balljoint.
