Lifting my GX
I'm new on here and I just bought a 2007 black GX470 and I would like to get some advice on what I should do to achieve the look I want. First of all I'm not a hard core off-roader so I don't need any high end lift kit for rock crawling or anything. To be honest, I want it to look cool by putting larger tires on it and some new wheels. Right now I'm leaning towards 285/70/17 A/T tires and KMC Rockstar 2 wheels. Is it better to do the 2.5" spacer lift on the front or put new shocks and coils on to achieve my lift? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Spacers are the cheap way to do it and usually ride like crap, definitely go with shocks and coils if you can. A lot of people run a mild setup of bilsteins plus FJ coils for a pretty reasonable price, just have to find the used coils. Other kits are more pricey, $700 and up, but you get what you pay for. Since the FJ Cruiser kits and 4th gen 4runners use the same suspension as the GX, there are plenty of options!
As far as the Rockstars- DONT DO IT! Enough Bro-yotas already have them, get something different but thats just my .02 cents!
Use the search and check out Ih8mud's 120 section as well for more builds.
Good luck!

I've never been a fan of black on black so I'd lean towards something in gun metal or even a bronze. Those are still too much bling for my liking. Have you considered these?

Im looking at some down the road for my GX, they come in gun metal and black.
Either way its your ride, so do what you like!

I don't know much about offset. One of the wheels I'm looking at has a 10mm offset and also a -10mm offset. Which do I need to run fatter tires?

my spacers were the kind that bolt on top and do not pre-load, and it rides just like it did stock cause the spring rate was not changed. it could arguably be stiffer but the shocks on sport mode do just fine for me.
about half of 4runner users who just want larger tires do the spacer lift the proper way and are enjoying it, I see it all the time. get shocks if you need them and coilovers if you want to go offroad or need fine tuning. for me it was just fitting tires and a little more clearance, if I attack some rocks I would swap to coilovers.
I am not a fan of the bilstein fronts just because the bottom perch is held on with a c-clip, sure it usually holds but no thanks, I like my perches welded on and nothing short of that. I think its worse than a spacer lift.
I would reccomend just going 1.5" to 2", the 2.5" put my caster at the very edge and in hindsight I could have cleared the 285/70/17's with just the 1.5" lift. also you dont have to raise the rear as much then. my rear end is reasied up so high to match the front 2.5" lift it looks a little spacey with just 285/70's.
