My A/C seems to be not working. Auto mode has fan blowing but only hot air coming out and the A/C light is blinking. Did some searching and performed diag and returned codes 21 & 24. Code 21 due to performing test at night. Have not been able to find reason for code 24. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated.

 

That is becoz certain GX models has Magnetic AC Clutch compressor, and they have failed. The job to be done is replacing the AC Magnetic Relay. Which solves the Blinking issues and Hot air as mentioned.
1. Goto the Engine Bay Fuse Box.
2. Replace the Relay which is circled in Red ( AC Magnetic Clutch Relay) Refer to image attached.
3. The New Part Number is 90987-02028.( refer to the image attached)
You are good to go.
Ensure while you do this job, Disconnect the Battery Terminal (-). While you may loose the Favourite Radio Stations, Door Reprogramming needs to be done, which all a 5 minute job.

 

Thanks for the pic & help. Took a risk & ordered part from Rockauto last night. What is the risk of not disconnecting the battery? I've never pulled the battery cable in the past to replace a relay.

 

You can try it, To me personally does not look a problem, only make sure the key is not inserted into the Ignition. This is not to scare you, but when you have the battery terminal removed, this will make sure no fault code is recorded into the ECM while the relay is replaced. But I have done it once without the terminals being removed, and it was faultless, when started. It is just a precaution done for any Electronic component removal or replacement.

 

Just an update. The part I received from the internet was the wrong relay (looks like I ordered the wrong one). Went to autozone and bought the right relay. I changed out the relay circled and it did not fix the problem. It ended up being the relay 3 over & 1 down that controls the magnetic clutch relay. The relay below the blue one in the pic. All good now. thx

 

Thanks guys, saved me a couple hundred dollars on this fix. The mechanic quoted me $300-$500! My A/C light has been blinking and the A/C was just blowing out hot air. It would kick in every now and again if I kept pressing the A/C button - I tolerated this throughout the winter, but the weather in FL is starting to get super hot - did some research and came across this forum post - ordered the replacement AC Magnetic Clutch Relay (Part #: 90987-02028) for $9.99, it was a used Omron MR 122409 (not OEM), but it worked like a charm. As with Silvermtb6, my relay that needed to be replaced was 3 over to the right and 1 down from the one circled in red. Thanks again, guys.

 

Year on Year models differ the location of the Relays, The best way to identify the MAG clutch relay would be pop the cover of the fuse box and look under the cover for the exact location. Some times it is a witch hunt to locate. Glad it helped some of them and saved the $$$

 

Cheers mann777 and Silvermtb6. I think you guys helped me fix my A/C for $15. I have a 2003 GX470 and in my car, the relay circled in the picture is the Fan Relay, and the one indicated by Silvermtb6 is the magnetic clutch relay.

 

I recharged my AC once and blinking stopped. If it ever happens again I'll know other possible causes. Thanks for posting.

The Lexus dealership quoted me $367 for the diagnostic and replacement of the AC RELAY. The same problem that was stated on the first string. I backed off and told the dealership that I will observe it for awhile since this is the first time it happened since 2003. Can someone take a picture and post the exact location of the Ac magnetic clutch relay, please. Did you purchase the same part number as shown in the picture? As I read from the strings of reply, you did not remove the (-) negative terminal of the battery, is that correct?

 

I opened the relay and fuse compartment last night and took picture. I would like to verify if the relay referenced to the picture is the AC magnetic clutch relay. I also took a picture of the layout at the back of the cover of the relay box but it does not give much detailed information.

 

Based on your cover's schematic, I would guess it is the relay (MG CLT) directly below what your arrow is pointing at.
