5/30 seems like a very light weight oil for hotter climates like we have here in So. Ca. Is it possible that Lexus uses this weight as a milage boost? The manual says it's for energy conservation. I use 15/50 in my Porsche, but it's air cooled. Thoughts??
Thanks,
Bill

Hello
I use 5W / 30 synthetic on my GX. I may use 20W / 50 if it's going to see a lot of hard towing on summer. I don't know if the Toyota engineers change bearing clearances (tighter) when they recommend a thinner oil. But running 20W /50 shouldn't affect it in the short term.
This is the trend on most modern cars I heard, bearing clearance are tigher for less noise and longevity but they have to run on thinner weight oil for proper lubracation at normal operating temperatures.

5w30 is for across the board,5 is for the east cost and the snow belt but for those in the west and sunny places that never really drop below 40 degrees 10w30 is fine but in these newer engines that are built with such close specs 15/50 or 20/50 just would be questionable, if you have valve tapping or engine problems as you roll into the higher mileage it will be due to the lack of lubrication the engine is getting
Tundra owners with the 4.7L V8 running 5w30 have gone up and above 200k so don't try anything different
