Rusty Frame
Just bought a 2006 GX fully loaded with only 150k Miles for a very good price. Here in Nyc they’re hard to come across is mint condition so I’m glad I went ahead with the purchase. Only issue is there is rust all over the frame! For the most part it’s surface rust however there are some areas ( Toward the back where the spare tire is ) where there’s pieces falling off by poking it with my finger. Buddy of mine has a shop and said he can sand blast is and put the coating. I know that can be pricy but he’s willing to do it for cost price. So my question is should I go forward with the sand blasting or will that harm other components of the truck and give me other issues in the future?
i guess it wasn't mint condition underneath....unless you plan on keeping it for 10 years...i wouldn't go poking around...maybe just spray with some rust proof paint to slow the process, the truck is 16 years old...
Sand blasting on the truck is a very bad idea, sand is going to end up everywhere.
I tackled a similar project, used a needle scaler to clean the rust scaling off, then used a 3 part rust convertor/sealant system to treat the cleaned frame. It took me about 16 hours on my back, and it sucked to do. Never again.

Rust is the no. 1 headache. I can do a lot myself but it is hard to stop rust. I regardless started to rust proof my old 2005 GX when it was 12 year old. I wire brushed the frame then applied POR15. It did slow down rust but it did not stop it. Today when I look at the pictures of the truck I still feel sorry I sold it. The truck was perfect with only 109K miles when I sold it in 2021 except for the effort it took for rustproofing. The body was flawless and interior is spotless. I bought a 2022 and feel it is exactly the same truck except for rustproofing was done within a week of delivery.
I bought mine Sept of 21, it was a NJ vehicle with 250k on it, and its got a good bit of surface rust on the underside. I've got to get under there and slow it down, I'm planning on taking a wire brush to it... Not looking forward to it.
A wire brush is not a strong enough tool for the job IMO. A wire brush attachment that would fit in your drill would be better, but a needle scaler is far more powerful and quick to use if you have the compressed air to run it. It's an immense job laying on your back under the vehicle...so be ready for that.
