Default GX470 - Pros/Cons of getting one

Hello all.

I've been wanting to get an older SUV that has 4x4 capabilities and found the GX470. The I found this forum.
SO far from the research I've done, seems like a solid SUV if regular maintenance is done. What i want to know from all of you that own these, what are the pros and cons of getting an older gx470 and how many miles are too many miles to consider one? what is your yearly maintenance cost on average?

thank you all for your wisdom!

I found an 08 last year in pristine condition and 145k on the odometer. According to the car fax it was serviced every 5K-6K by a Lexus or Toyota dealer and had everything done except replacing the timing belt. I had a trusted Mechanic go over the car before I purchased it and he advised me to buy it. The vehicle had been well cared for and had no rust on the undercarriage and no dings in the paint or body. Despite being 13 years old at the time of purchase I purchased it and had my mechanic replace the timing belt and water pump.

The only con I have is the requirement for Hi test gas.

I wouldnt buy a vehicle this old without a carfax and qualified mechanic to review the vehicle prior to purchase.

Well, I have an '03 Toyota Sequoia with a similar drivetrain that has over 500,000 miles. And it takes regular gas. Got it up for sale too.

93 octane is optional, lower octane might just lower rated HP, otherwise no issues

Yea, I have read the same thing. Computer is smart enough to adjust timing for the lower octane gas with the penalty of slightly lower peak HP. The motor is normally aspirated and not forced induction (turbo/supercharger) so not as critical like those cars.

Spend some time on Autotrader or similar app looking for what you want across nearby states. Your local market may vary somewhat but likely close. Don’t buy a rust bucket, something with leaks, anything without maintenance history …CARFAX is a good tool but you can also check Lexus Drivers and enter the VIN to see maintenance completed at a Lexus dealer.

I was very particular on color and maintenance history and found what looked like a decent GX in a neighboring state at a good price, paid for a third party inspection, negotiated a simple needed repair, and flew in to purchase and drove it back. Overall saved probably $2000 and got the color/ maintenance history we wanted.

In the weeks after we got it home, it needed a hose, alternator, radiator, and new leather on the steering wheel…this cost me about $400 diy.

Not sure about GX's, but I listed my Sequoia for $6000 but it's had a ton of recent service including the timing belt done. For an 04 GX KBB says $9700 fair purchase price.

A dealer in Virginia is asking $8795 for a 2003 base model with a smashed passenger door & rocker panel.
Insane.

KBB is way out of touch with the current market, FYI.

Paid $15k for a high mileage(225k) ‘07 GX today. It’s in shockingly good condition, my wife guessed it had 85k and I thought 130k. We both really like the color and it has service records since new, west coast car since new, not a flake of rust anywhere.
