Shifter cable broke

My wife 06 gx with 120,000 miles left her stranded the other day, Shifter was loose, Woundnt go in gear , Turns out it was the cable , Anyone ever heard of this?

I've never heard of it. But if you're in a rustbelt state (or the vehicle is from one), I wouldn't be surprised.
Looks like the part is about $200.
