Adding 12v second row USB accessory power outlet for GX470
I recently added a 2007 GX470 to the family. (Being an older vehicle, this post may be a little late, but hopefully someone can use the information.) So far, we love everything about the GX, except the lack of power outlets aft of the front seats. I searched this forum and found a 2015 post from "Jacket" titled DIY 12v second row power for the GX460 (THANK YOU, Jacket!) Using Jacket's method and modifying it slightly for my first gen GX, I successfully added a dual USB charging port, below the rear AC controls, for the second row of seats. The project cost was less than $30 and took about 90 minutes. I would encourage anyone attempting this to also reference Jacket's post, as it includes some details and techniques I did not. Here is what I did.
I purchased a Add-a-Circuit from Amazon: HitCar model EA-FEM+DT. It contained the fuse adapter, wire leads and connectors, as well as two, 5A mini fuses to keep the total draw at the 10A limit of the original circuit. If you choose this product, order the "small" fuse size for Japanese vehicles.
I purchased a roll of 16 gauge automotive primary wire from a home improvement store (also available at auto parts stores, but at a slightly higher cost).
I purchased a lighted, 4.2A dual USB car charger from Amazon: Rydonair model RARDUSBB. (I opted for one, dual USB outlet but there are several other options for power outlet styles. I like the blue light this model casts onto the floor, but a non-lighted model is also available.)
This photo shows the add a fuse I purchased.
1. Remove trim from back of center console, including rear AC control panel. Start at the bottom on each side and work up.
2. Test fit the new outlet. I used double sided tape to secure it in place and reinstalled the panel before drilling the hole in the panel.
3. Remove the 10A CIG fuse from the dash fuse panel. (I used this circuit because the open spot in my panel did not have power.)
4. Remove trim panel from below steering column. (One screw and a couple of clips.)
5. Remove front, small trim panel from driver's side of center console.
6. Measure out the required length of power wire to reach from the fuse panel to the outlet. Measure out the required length of ground wire to reach from the grounding point to the outlet. (Approximately 8 feet of each should be more than enough.)
7. Assemble the power and ground wires using crimp connectors (the products I ordered included all the connectors).
8. Run power and ground wires behind console trim and behind dash trim. I was able to tuck the wires under the console trim without removing it. I secured the wires to the wiring bundle below the steering column. I used a bolt in the upper left corner of the driver's footwell for the grounding point (although not shown in the photo, I added a second nut over the existing nut to secure the ground wire connection without removing the original nut).
9. Connect the new Add a Circuit fuse to the panel.
10. Drill the hole and install the outlet. Connect the wires to the outlet.
11. Reinstall the panel and enjoy not having to hear the kids complain about powering their devices.
Hope that helps someone. Thanks to everyone who posts on these forums!
I used a simple spade bit. Not the threaded kind, as I think that would pull the bit in too quickly. A plain spade bit, slow speed and light pressure. The plastic is pretty thin.
