front spacer lift - warning
I know there are lots of option for lift, but I'm really trying to keep this within budget since I rarely keep any vehicle beyond 1 or 2 years. So having said that, I was able to get a low mileage (15k) used front struts, rear shocks/coils from an FJ Cruiser. Ideally, like to lift 2-2.5" overall.
2 weeks ago, I converted the rear. The FJ gave me no lift as some people had claimed upto 1". Well, that didn't happen, but it was fine. I combined it with the SSO set for 1.25", so the overall lift with this setup is 1.25" for rear. I will eventually try to swap out the coil, or maybe a 1" spacer on top of coil like they do with 4runner? Will decide on that later.
For this weekend, I tackled the front. For the front, I had the front FJ strut. I bought some 2.5" spacers from amazon. These are the spacers that goes on top of the hat, so for 2.5", i think the spacer measures about 1.25", which extended the overall length of the strut. After installed, the extended length overly extended the upper OEM control arms to the point it was hitting the coil springs. So as a warning, if you are using OEM upper control arms, do not use these spacers on top of the hat. For now, I just put the old struts back as I needed to drive the GX.
So now, I need to decide to either get some longer coils or spacers that goes under the hat with the stock coils. Thinking of getting spacers that goes under the hat, which I believe is only available via ToyTec Lifts? Not sure if anyone else makes them?
On top of that.. suspension failure from stressed components is no joke and cost much more than a decent suspension lift kit.
