Default Diagnose faulty backup camera?

I have a 2006 lexus gx 470 with factory backup camera that has stopped working? The local deal wants roughly $800 just for the camera. Is there a way to diagnose if the camera is bad without getting new unit? Also must one remove the back panel to get to the camera?

The camera can be unscrewed from the outside of the door. But the connector might not be right there - some door disassembly might be needed to follow the wire to where it can be unplugged.

The camera and the computer module are each $500-ish. But I'd want some assurances that it isn't a wiring problem before throwing parts at it. I would look at the wires where they pass thru the rubber boot on the cargo door. Try telling them that if they replace the camera and it doesn't solve the problem you want a refund of the parts cost.

Hmm, weird. I don't have experience with Toyota/Lexus, but as an Infiniti tech, static displayed is a bad camera, black display is a feed issue.

@ Bob 5 - Hi did you ever find out what was wrong with your camera?

My wife said she was backing up using the rear camera, saw a line come across the screen and then went black. Trying to determine what the issue is so I can do a DIY fix if not to complicated.

My wife said while she was backing up her screen had a white light, then a white line then it went black. If its not to challenging would like to make this a DIY project. Everything else on the dip lay works

Well now I am trying to find out how to fix the back-up camera on our 2004 GX. It was working today for my wife but when I went to move it in the driveway it was just a gray screen. I took it our of reverse and put in back in a few times and same thing, just a gray screen. The rest of the display (maps etc works).
I've searched the forum but no answers yet.

You can replace it yourself. Camera on eBay for about $250. You need to remove the interior panel on the door.

It is not a wiring issue, it is the LENS getting fungi buildup and salt deposit as sealant used around the CAM is defective quality.. You can even pick a similar cam from Toyota models. It is straight unscrew and replace. The wiring is not the problem here. Except the Rear CAM.

All,

I've read a lot of forums on the Lexus thread. I just recently bought a 2014 RX 350. This forum was the first I came upon as this bothered me the most. Just by reading through all the threads I can tell that this crowd is not the same as the Honda Accord Crowd. All of the modifications are dealer based. The dealer will always tell you NO!

First of all grid lines can be added tadibrothers.com specializes in backup cameras. They have a specific module that you can replace your Lexus RX 350 camera with a centered, gridlines, better quality camera while using stock monitor. It is a little pricey, but it is definitely possible. I actually sent them a email and they were very quick to reply.

My 06 GX470 camera died, lines through screen, looking on ebay I saw used ones for $275, screw that. So I took a shot and bought a universal one on amazon for $12,99, spliced it and epoxied it in place. It works better than the original.

I have the same issue with my 06 gx470, I’m not going to spend a$1000 dollar for that ,you can buy Tesla style radio that has a climate control on touch screen + new camera for about $800-1000 US.or buy a new camera $15-40 just disconnect the old one and run the wires to the original display. But there is an issue you have to fix, the old camera takes 6 volts when the new cams are 12v.a good installer will easily fixes it.good luck
