Default CV Boot Estimate

Coming back from Home Depot today,I start teh truck and teh VHS light is on.Take it to dealer down the street and after a while the service tech comes out with 3 seperate probems totaling $4000.

1) $1400.00...They are replacing the cv boots on both front sides with a boot kit which is $56.00. They are quoting book time of 10 hours of labor @130.00 per hour. When I got home,I called him back and said seriously?Ten hours?? He said, the complete sub frame has to come out. Really? What sub frame?! I told to to hold up on it and he said his guys are already working on it.

I am going back early tomorrow to tell him he needs to come down quite a bit. Will let you know what happens, but, what have some of you paid for this? Again, they are NOT replacing the shafts, just going with a boot kit.

With labor (dealer rate) it shouldn't be more than $500 per side.

WOW, thats horrible, you can get a remanufactured OEM axle for 100 a side, and a 100 for labor, my local shop does it in a few hours if that. It is not that hard of a job really, I've done it myself on my FJ.

I wouldn't even try to "negotiate" with these crooks, just get your vehicle away from them and find a different shop.
This isn't even in the realm of what it should cost, and no telling what else is in that $4,000 quote.

No kidding,we had no intentions of paying that price of $1400.00. Its really a crime and I feel sorry for a lot of people that get screwed like this.

Dealer rate at this shop is $130 per hour. With the 10 hours of book time they told us for the job.....its $1300.00 in labor.

Gyus here is an update. In yesterdays post,I left some things out as I was pissed and in a hurry.I am going to make seperate threads on the other 2 quotes they gave me,both,of which we did not let them do.

After leaving the dealership yesterday,I went straight to my mechanic He works on our other cars and we have never had a problem with his work.He also did the front brakes on the GX470 almost 40,000 miles ago after another Lexus dealership could not get the squeeking to stop after they replace brake pads.

I told him they were charging us 10 hours for labor so I asked him what he would charge. He looked it up and came up with 4.5 hours book time to do both sides. He could not believe it,so he called the dealership right in front of me,but, the advisor left for the day. Anyway, his price was almost $700 for parts and labor.

In the neantime, wife called another dealership and asked for a price on parts and the amount of time they would charge for. They also said 4.5 hours with a total of around $700,parts and labor.

We go to dealer early this morning and go right to the advisors desk.I tell him we have a big problem with his book time charges. He says theres a lot involved, entire sub frame need to be dropped, andblah, blah, blah. We say we want him to match the book time of the oter peolpe we spoke to,and he says absolutley not.

I then go to the shop manages desk and tell him what we told the advisor. He goes into a book flipping pages. He looks lost and states,"that does seem like a lot of time".

Now we get to the service manager and wait for him in the office. He comes in,listens to our complaint and says no problem,we will make it right matching the prices and giving us 20 % off. He further says we do not want you to feel that you have to shop around for prices and in the future,"come right to me,thats what I am here for".

Final price was $651.90 which includes tax. We ar happy but it still bothers us that they just screw people like this, especially the elderly and women.
