I just realized last night that if I click my dimmer (in front of left knee) down one notch from the top position (thomp) that it displays a black back ground on my nav display. Is there a way to set this while my dimmer is at its brightest position? I like the black background of the nav display, but I also like my instrument panel (RPM, Miles, Gas) at its brightness.

Cover the sensor on your dash with a piece of black tape. This sensors purpose is to change your day screen view white to your night screen view black. The white screen at night is very glary and it is way to bright to drive at least it does that for me. If you cover the sensor and leave your dimmer at the highest part before it stops. You will get maximum brightness and if your sensor is covered then the nav screen will be black
By the way the sensor is towards the front of the dash near the windshield on the drivers side look and you will see it

If you put black tape over sensor it will just make it more sensitive to turning into night mode faster or staying in night mode if the tape is dark enough. No matter if it's in night mode or you cover the sensor, if you turn the illumination dial all the way to the right, it will always turn the navi screen into day mode and make the gauge cluster brighter.Originally Posted by mrblister

I've always run my dash illumination at 50% to extend the life of the light bulbs. Is this technique valid on the GX?

I don't think it's necessary. Our cluster uses LEDs. Even at 100% brightness Lexus probably isn't running the LEDs at their fully spec'ed power rating.Originally Posted by chiph9

yep. Its doesn't matter if I cover it at night. It does nothing for me with the dimmer all the way up. I'll continue to push the dimmer to its highest point without snapping it into that final position.Originally Posted by RCsGX
