2006 GX 470 about 69,000 miles
I took the car into service yesterday because the VSC Trac, VSC Off, Slip Indicator Light and Malfunction Indicator Lamp icons lighted up on my dashboard the other day. When I had the heater on - there was an odd smell. I can't really explain the smell - it wasn't a burning type of smell but it didn't last long. When I drove the car to Lexus service dept., I noticed that when I pressed the accelerator, it was harder to press to go faster so I stayed around 35 miles per hour. I always have this car serviced routinely.

After day later they call me to say "the air injection pump need to be replaced (confirmed malfunction codes and intermittent failure of air injection pump)." The cost would be $3,329.00. He told me that he can see if the service dept can clean the pump (costly labor) or call Lexus to see if they can take some of the cost...I will have to wait for tomorrow morning to get the answers.
I'm pretty upset about this news. I just want to know if I can get this done cheaper at another reputable shop around the Lynnwood, WA or Everett Wa.

I never heard of an air injection pump until today. I know this car has a lot of mileage but I didn't think I would encounter this type of problem if I serviced the car routinely.

I just want to make sure I'm not being taken advantage of here.

The second link above in RCsGX's reply is from my thread. My car went into limp mode also. If you took your time it would reach 55 mph. But would not accelerate very fast. Lexus wanted around $1200.00 for the pump. Just get the Dorman part and do it yourself. Or get a local mechanic to do it. It took me about 6 hrs. He could do it in about 4 hrs. It's just time consuming because it's under the intake. One note on the pump the Dorman part does not come with the top part that the hose hooks to. Just take it off the old one. The new pump comes with a gasket.

 

I'm a very green newb when it comes to GX, but this is something I picked up from the 4Runner crowd... you can do an air injection pump bypass and save yourself about 3k.

Other than being a tad expensive side for what it is, I think it's better than spending 10x for the dealer fix. The fix is legit.

 

The bypass module will trick the system, which depending on what code you're pulling (closed / open) will work but the only true fix is to do what fantic did, which is to replace the Toyota pump with a Dorman / GM pump.

In one of the links I posted above, there's a link / PDF that shows you how to remove the intake manifold. If you have basic hand tools and patience it's not hard to do.

 

I should start reading all the replies before replying to the thread... lol. I didn't know the 'bypass' link was already mentioned.

I'm going to have to agree that Dorman/GM pump is better way to go.

Can this car be under some sort of emission warranty that I can use to help with the cost?

 

I tried. Was told it was covered under the original warranty. I believe 4 yr and 80K. Since you're under 80K it wouldn't hurt to ask.
