Default 20" wheels causing vibration

I just put 20" Status Game wheels on my 07 GX. I have had them balanced twice and between 55-65mph the steering wheel vibrates considerably. Is there a fix for this? New steering box valve, hub rings. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a balancing issue to me. Not all balancing machines or technicians for that matter are created equal. Try getting them "Road Force" balanced.

Also, tires have a dot on the sidewall that is supposed to be lined up with the valve stem. Every little bit helps.

agreed. Plus here is a little tip. I had my chrome wheels balanced than added pretty chrome valve caps to match the wheels. Well I had a slight vibration at 65mph. I took the chrome valve caps off and the vibration went away. I guess adding just a small amount of weight will counteract the balance weights, especially if the chrome caps are solid like mine were. Just my 2 cents.

Also those aftermarket rims must be hub centric and the hole must be the same size as the hub itself. You may need some rings to get the rims correct. When I looked for my 20s I found out that there were only so many companies with rims that were made for Toyota even if the lug pattern was correct.

You need to get them balanced lug centrically and not hub centrically. Find someone with a roadforce machine and with a hawkea adapter to center the rim on the machine via lug holes and not hub opening.

This is interesting as GX470s and 4runner are hubcentric, meaning the rim rides on the hub itself. It doesn't run on the lugs. My 20s were roadforced hubcentricly and run smooth as can be.

Learn something new every day I suppose.

Hub centric is the answer. You may want to get a set of machined spacers made up, just a few millimeters will do. Hub centric and wheel centric will be needed. Contact Motorsport Technology - www.motorsport-tech.com

They do high-end machining for exotics and can handle the job. They have high-end CNC machining centers and use top of the line aircraft grade alloys.

909-514-0091 ask for Junior or Larry, they'll help.

Good luck.

Please let me know if this works for you and post photos.
Been thinking about putting on 18's or 20's but quite skeptical about all the vibrations and other issues.

Thanks for the advice. Have the hub rings on their way and going to try that first. If that doesn't work I'll have it road force balanced. Pics to come soon.

lol told you it was the hub rings. if it was a bad balance job you would notice a vibration well before 50-60mph. typically aftermarket wheels are a larger bore (so they will fit many vehicles) so you need to get hub rings to make them hub centric. never ever get your wheels lug centric. you'll risk shearing off studs left and right.
