Did reverse fail all at once or was it more gradual?
The reverse wasn't working when I got it. So not sure if it was gradual.

That was my thinking too. Looking at pics online, the 4Runner ones are missing the shifter setup for the 4Hi/4Lo.

Yaaaaaa, the 4Runners have an electronic transfer case switch vs. the GX's shifter, but that's not the transmission. I can't tell you what would be different between the 2.

Probably different solenoids and software so the Lexus owners get smooth shifts.

I thought Land Cruiser transmission were the same as well? Not that it would be easy to find one out of a LC lol.

Almost all models have their own catalog of part #'s, even if parts can interchange.
I would look for a gx470 trans at a wrecker, then have a decent import shop who knows trans rebuild it.

Side note - if you drop the trans pan you'll see wires and solenoids. It's possible a solenoid is dead.
My guess is the trans is ok, possible solenoid issue.
Mine has 250kmi on it. I did do a trans filter and oil swap around 80k. I need to do that again.

I highly doubt reverse is actually damaged. I agree to check the solenoids and switches for reverse first.

You need to take this to a shop and get a proper diagnosis and quote to repair. From there you can determine if repair or replacement makes the most sense.

Nobody can properly diagnose over the internet for something like this.

Default 2005 Lexus GX 470 Shift Delay from Park to Drive

I have the same problem with my 2005 GX 470. Took it in to my transmission guy. He had it for over a month. After replacing a burnt out pigtail and Neutral Safety Switch he found that the problem was still there. He did more diagnostics and found that the shifter is loosey goosey from age allowing the driver to shift from Park to drive too quickly and when that happens there is some kind of communication delay between the computer module and the tranny. He explained that a new shifter is stiff and does not allow the driver to just slam the truck into drive. He also demonstrated that by slowly shifting the truck through each shift P, R, N, D., waiting a few seconds between each selection solved the issue... and voila....no delay. He demonstrated this action over and over to me...with no delay. Then he shifted it quickly going from Park to Drive and the delay was there again. I trust this guy and I know he is very thorough and knowledgeable. He did not give up and pushed and pushed to solve the issue and he also writes articles for transmission magazines. I sometimes forget and shift too quickly and there is a delay but at least I know that this is not a transmission issue.

Check it out and have an inspection for any seepage of the Trans fluid. If it is clean, I guess the Clutch plates within the transmission required a relook, which is a major job, And the dealer is the best bet you have which is within the trans warranty. let us know you update.
Also do you sense any whining noise within the transmission on parking or on drive. keep us posted
hello Mann777
i am currently hearing a whine on my Lexus is250 2007 a960e transmission, i just purchased this vehicle with 160k miles and i am wondering if you are able to help me diagnose what is wrong as you asked if their transmission had a whine. This transmission has made a whine the whole time. I found a big leak and orange black fluid i believe to be dex iii. Also a 3 very small flakes of metal. I hope this is not the issue. It seems that someone refilled the leaked out fluid with dex iii fluid. I have flushed and now red atf ws comes out. everything is shifting except 6th gear. it was really jerky especially at turns so i added more fluid till it is spilling out the refill valve, then i opened the check plug with the car on and let it drain till it was barely dribbling. Now it doesnt really jerk at turns. It still cannot go into 6th gear, but the whine receded a bit. It might be going down with more fluid in the trans. the rpms are too high for the power it is giving out. It has less power the higher the gears go. When its in d mode it will shift down from 5 all the way to 3 when it should go into 6th. Then it will not leave 3rd even in s mode. If i disconnect the battery it will not have this issue unless i have it in drive and try to hit 6. I think its in limp mode due to a red exclaimation and it has low fluid or something. It feels like it needs alot more power than it should to go. i assumed it is lower on fluid or a solenoid is bad. i cleaned the s3 and the two other solenoids near. S3 is responsible for 5-6th gear. Also a new filter when i flushed it. it doesnt downshift when in s mode, and i am descreasing in speed, it goes from gear (s) to 1 and skips anything in between when i come to a stop. It goes to the highest gear on s mode even when it is not at the correct speed to engage that gear. I have a red exclamation on the dash but i am assuming its for tpms sensor. Is it still low on fluid which is why it whines? I dont think it is able to resigster my speed correctly. As it just goes to the highest selected gear in S mode. Perhaps the Ai shift has gone bad?
Any ideas on the issue with this vehicle?

Marla6286 Thank you! My GX hesitated badly going into D. I shifted it very slowly and it went right into gear. I have a sloppy shifter and ordered the fix from amts4x4.square.site AMTS from Australia has a longer shift detent pin to fix the issue of sloppy shifter. Super easy Diy fix. I am not affiliated but thought it may help the next person.
Cheers!

This is the GX470 forum, not the one for the IS250

I think you need to take it to a Toyota transmission specialist and get their opinion.
They should have a code reader that will read codes from the transmission (not all aftermarket readers can do this)
This could be anything from clogged passages to something mechanical.

Default GX4670 transmission / brake issue

I have a 06 GX470 I just bought used.

When the car is at a stop light stopped and it's in drive also happens in reverse.. while I have the brakes applied there's a jump / engage attempt and it happens every 10 seconds or so..
Does anyone know what that would be?
