Automatic Transmission - Problems or questions
I had the clunk, but it only happened as you were approaching a stop. Not repeatedly.
Unless... it's happening in sync with the A/C compressor engaging? (causes RPMs to raise, applying extra torque to the prop shaft)
Chip H.

Hmm…wondering if it could be brake booster issue. My previous GX had similar sensation thru the brake pedal but only on occasions. It felt like a spring letting go. You hear/feel a “boing” each time. Never affected drivability nor braking. Sorry not much help.
I believe when the Air Suspension adjusts the ride height when stopping at a junction its the clung from the propeller shaft adjusting ... there is an upgraded prop shaft in the service manual to fix this but i just grease up all the nipples and its fine... It was worse for me before I replaced the airbags as it was constantly adjusting.
Hey guys,
i have a 2004 gx470 that i purchased a year ago that’s currently sitting at about 222,000 miles and recently its been having what i would like to call transmission morning sickness where upon first start in the morning it has a hard time getting going and the transmission will slip however Whats strange is once it warms up it shifts and drives completely normal. Now i took it to a transmission shop and they are trying to tell me the solution is a 3,000 dollar rebuild but i dont have that type of money so what do you guys think? Could a possible fluid change fix my problems?

I also must add that the transmission slipping does not happen everytime but it’s becoming a problem that im starting to see happen more often, what used to happen is the suv would need a few more revs to get it going around 2-3 rpm and then suddenly you would feel the transmission grab and the truck would jerk forward and drive normally after that
You could try a couple of drain n fills but the way you describe the problem you might be past that point.
it's 3k for a reman from the dealer, might be a better option for you. plus labour/transfer case gasket and oil.

Try the least costliest method first. Could be as simple as low on fluid. Do a proper drain/fill and make sure your level is correct at the right temp range. Reason yours runs fine after warming up is as fluid heats up it expands so there’s more “volume” in circulation.
or a thinner viscosity at higher temp !
Drain and fill first. You will need to use the temp/level process and not the 'put in the same amount taken out' just in case your levels were low already.
If that does not do it then I would have the solenoids checked.

Hello all,
I’m new to the forum. I recently purchased a 2005 Lexus GX470 with 149k. So far, I’m loving it. However, something very odd happened today. I was driving when suddenly the VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, and the A/T P light all came on. I pulled over and was confused. I turned the car off and back on. The lights were still on. When I tried to shift out of park, it wouldn’t move. I sat for a while, cutting the car off and on and it still wouldn’t move. My brother told me to put my key in the hole near the gears and finally I was able to shift. When I hit a u-turn to turnaround, the GX jerked a couple of times in the process as if I were pressing on the brakes. I was able to make it home, but when I started to back in, I couldn’t shift again. After several tries it went into reverse but I noticed screeching when backing up. I took a risk by driving it halfway down the block. I threw it in reverse again and after two tries it shifted to reverse and the screeching was there and even louder than before. Anyone know what could be wrong?
