I just put in a Gen4 GPS update purchased from Sewell ($175 ballpark) in my LS430, 2005. 10 minutes max. Easiest $125 I ever saved. I've seen instructions on removing a bunch of screws that were absolutely wrong. Only one plastic pop rivet on the right side, then two screws to lift the unit out. Must be an LS430 older than the 2005 I have where you have to remove more screws.

The price of manufacturing the disc is not what you are paying for here...you are paying for intellectual property. You are paying for the time it took the mapping company to create/update the maps and the software writers to write the software.
Same concept with computer software and video games.

i paid $50k+ for my GX470 and the disk came with the vehicle. updates should be like $25, no more.
i think i can say this while staying within the rules of the forum, you dont need to buy updated disc from the dealer. search around and you can get new updated disc for like $20.
Totally agree with you there and think they take as much advantage of customers as possible till they can't anymore. Then another generation or new Navi system comes out and it's starts all over. However there are may that pay. I was told at the dealer that some lexus owners won't even bother to change the 6CD disc changers themselves so the buy a new one and have it installed for them LOL!!Originally Posted by Taco_Kid

Do you have to go to the dealer to update the Navigation?
I have a 2006 RX330 w/Navigation 5.01. If I update, will I loose the "over ride" capability?

Wow! I just did the Nav update on my 2004 GX470...super simple. If you can load a CD to your player, you can do this update in less than 2minutes!! Amazing the dealers charge over $400 to do this! Updated maps and graphics...love it!

Where did you get the disk from? How much? I'd love to update the maps on our '04, they are original still, and useless as a result.Originally Posted by Cohome

$177 including tax and shipping from Sewell. Click on the sponsors tab at the top of the page, go to Sewell and search for GPS Update. Good directions on ordering the correct CD. Installation instructions are online, but it is so simple. You just need to know where the CD is located...it's under the passenger seat. Slide seat forward, open CD cover, push button to eject the old CD and then put in the new CD...THAT's IT!! Auto loads and you are ready to go!Originally Posted by IanB2

The dealers will charge what the consumers are willing to pay, unfortunately most Lexus owners have money. I on the other hand bought a 5 year old GX to be able to afford the style and safety. I had to bite the bullet and but an updated disc because in Boston with the big dig every road changed rendering my NAV useless without it.

The dealership would over charge for updating your navigation system. It is something you could do yourself. You could find a 12.1 version disc for around 150-170 dollars and put it in and it will update itself.

I have a new to me 06 and the navi doesnt seem to provide anything more than my iphone map app. I'm assuming the software has never been updated. Is it worth the cost of the new disc to get it up to date?

The factory nav will never come close to the iphone map app in functionality, so I'd say no. I much prefer my Garmin.Originally Posted by Slatts2013
