Default Windshield Cracked Without Being Hit

Have a 1 month old GX with a cracked windshield for no apparent reason. Left the house this morning and noticed a 10 inch crack which starts at upper corner of passanger side and radiates down to middle of passanger's viewing area. Smooth crack. No hits by rocks. Vehicle left out on secure drive way last night (have Thule carrier on rack) but temperature was only between 45 to 60 degrees.

Anyone have any like experiences, answers, suggestions or comments before I visit the dealer on Monday? Thanks.

A tiny rock chip can cause a crack to suddenly open up. Also, very sudden temp changes can do this, as when a scalding hot interior/windshield has cold water sprayed on it.

I had a '96 LS400 years back and that happened twice. Just wake up to a huge crack with no impact marks. Being in AZ, I was told it was due to the fact that the glass gets so hot and any cool liquid will crack it. I am sure that could happen, but unless someone went out and sprayed a cold beer on my glass while it was in the garage overnight, I don't know what it could have been. Maybe a bad install or something. But on the 3rd windshield it stopped.

I've had 4 Lexuses (or is it Lexi) of different types, that LS was the only one to spontaneously crack glass. Never had a problem with any of the others.

Thank you , Donger.

Sometime in the past two years I knew I had read Lexus threads with situations like yours, that's why I asked the previous questions. Did the dealer make good on your windshields? Wishful thinking.

I never tried the dealer. The car was a few months old and at first I figured it must have been a rock, so I had it replaced by my insurance. The guy putting in the glass mentioned that it didn't look like anything hit it. It wasn't until number 2 a few months later that I started wondering, but I thought it was a bad install from the glass company and had them come out and do it again (I always used Lexus glass).

That third one lasted for the remaining time of the lease, so I had no need to go to the dealer about it. However, as yours is much newer than mine was when it got the first crack, I'd go back to the dealer - but be prepared to pick up the new glass on your insurance and cross your fingers it doesn't happen again.
