Lexusnc,
Thanks, I'm in Greensboro, went to school in W-S. I guess I'll have to get the update or I'll go crazy wondering if it's taking me on some crazy route because it doesn't know of a new road. Thanks for checking.

Default 4.1

Ordered the 4.1 DVD from lexus-parts and got it today. Just as lexusnc has posted, no new features. Dealer wanted $350.00 (includes install--which takes all but 10 seconds). Got it for $288 (+ $17.50 freight charge) and received it in exactly one week. I live in a new development and was happy to see the streets there included. The POI's (especially restaurants) still included in somewhat of a haphazard manner. For example one chain restaurant 1 mile away is not in database but the same chain 12 miles away is there.

Strat1,

Does the new version offer phone number lookup for POI? Any chance you can post some screen shots photo?

Many Thanks!

This can not be done conventionaly because the DVD has data in both layers. Comercial DVD burners can only burn one layer. What could possibly work is to strip out the data you don't need so it fits on a 4.7GB DVD, but I would not have the first clue as to the format the NAV system needs the data in. So I guess the short answer is no.

Default Dual layer burners

I have successfully backed up my copy using sony's dual layer DVD burner(costs about 85 dollars), You have to also buy a dual layer 9 gb DVD disc they run 15 bucks a piece. I used the shareware called shrinkdvd and nero sdk 1.05 to do it. Im not advocating illegal copies but just for the purpose of backing up data so if one disc is damaged you have another one.

As I understand it, the new DVD will not give you any new FEATURES (such as phone number input) it will only update and expand the database for existing features.

Does anyone know when the next gen will be available for upgrade? I love the current version on the LS and LX which offer phone number lookup for POI.

Thanks!

I think the just of this thread is that you cannot get those features with the existing 03 or 04 NAVIs. You would have to replace your current NAVI with the newer 05 NAVI COMPLETELY. Not a good option. This appears to be borne out by the fact that the current 04GX's are coming WITH the v4.01 DVD. This is the same DVD that comes with the 05GX's and it doesn't provide the new interface in the current 04's even WITH this newer version in the system.

This all leads me to a not so philosophical question anymore: How are we going to update the technology in our vehicles without having to buy an entirely new vehicle? I for one want to have the latest gadgets, but I don't want to have to upgrade my SUV every couple of years just to get the new computer. Of course, I guess the car industry would never go for that, they'd love to have us buy new ones every year.

Hi all, I was directed to this thread even though I have an LS430.

Here is my question: I have an '01 LS430 with DVD version 2000 ver .1. I just aquired on ebay version 3.3 (part # 86271-33042 and 464210-0491). Will this work and give me updated maps? Updated interface? And the easy question, where the heck does the DVD go? in the dash, trunk?

Thank you for the help. If you could e-mail me at russ@russgelberg.com that would be great.

Russ
