What else to replace when doing timing belt replacement?
Looking at getting my GX470 with approx 88K miles worked on and what else should I prepare for when I get the timing belt replaced? Pumps? Seals? Etc.
TIA
TIA
You definitely want a new water pump, timing belt tensioner, pulleys (Aisin timing belt kit)
I would also consider:
New Drivebelt Tensioner (You have to take a lot off to remove this-and this is taken off when doing the timing belt)
Idler Pulley
Drivebelt
Fan Pulley Bracket
Radiator Hoses
I’m sure there’s more I’m missing.

I coming up on my second TB change out, in addition to my TB and waterpump I plan to also change the front main crank seal, the cam seals and the VVTI o-ring seals. Should be fun, I did the same on my SC430 that has the 3UZ-FE (similar to the 2UZ-FE in our GX470).
I noticed you said "Looking at getting... worked on...", implying you're not doing it yourself. If so, I'll share "our" tail from two weeks ago. I found my son, who lives in Denver, a 2007 GX470 with 49K miles at the Lexus dealer in Fort Worth for an incredible price and they did several maintenance items before we bought in, including front CV axle boots, left rear shock (which was blown), new pads and resurfaced rotors and new Michelin Defenders. Before we could deliver it to him, the alternator went out and we had a Toyota dealer replace it. Other than that, it was perfect. Garaged/like new! I should have bought it for me - HA!
He picked it up and drove it back to Denver. I did some more research, including here, and decided he should get the timing belt done, strictly based on age because it hadn't been done. The dealer said it didn't need it yet... A Toyota/Lexus SUV builder/maintenance shop agreed it should be done and quoted ~$1,600 for timing belt kit, with water pump, idler and tensioner. A local Lexus deal quoted the same, but included a loaner! When he got there, they said, "Um, you should probably do the 90K mile service because they didn't do all the fluids." (transmission, transfer case, both differentials). We agreed, especially since the timing belt was included in that service. UNTIL, they had taken it apart and came back with an estimate of $3,800! "Oh, the water pump and pulleys aren't included in the 90K mile service, just the timing belt, but the water pump has been leaking so you need to do it. Plus, the fan pulley bracket has a bad bearing and the serpentine tensioner is making noise, so you need to do those too."
I priced out all the extra parts at my local Lexus dealer, which would have been $1,000 less if I bought them myself. After sharing my evidence and griping them out for not clarifying after I had clearly asked for a timing belt kit service, they knocked off about $850. Lesson learned: Clarify everything before letting them take it apart or go to a trusted mechanic instead of the stealership. At least we ended up with a more reasonable price at the end, but not without some pain.
