Default Warm console - Insulate it?

I'm a happy owner of a new to me 2006 GX470 in great shape. When I'm driving I like to take my phone out of my pocket but don't like it lying around where it could go flying in a "dynamic" situation. So I put it in the console behind the cup holders and closed the lid. After a while I took it out and it was surprisingly hot. Not hot enough to put it in cooldown mode, but way hotter than I like as that kills batteries. My questions are: 1) for others, is that level of warmth normal (not hot but definitely heat coming up through the bottom)? 2) I pulled up the rubber mat and measured it to cut a square of some type of insulation to put under the rubber mat. Any suggestions of something not too thick to put under the rubber mat to keep heat from coming up through the bottom? Thanks!

That's normal - the exhaust and transfer case are underneath it.

No real suggestions on insulation. The pink foam board will work but will be unsightly.

Trans tunnel getting warm is not unusual. A foil-backed product like FatMat/Dynamat or similar would do a good job of reflecting heat back down without adding a lot of bulk.

Or you could invest in a proper phone holder?

Thanks for the replies. I used Dynamat and that helped. Regarding a phone holder, is there a holder that secures strongly to the vehicle without marring the wood or leather? If so, can you please give me the name? For a lot of holders, if you're in an accident, the holder may not lose the phone but the holder is not going to stay suctioned to the dash or windshield, or stuck on the air vents or in the cup holder. Thus the phone will likely be out of reach. In the console storage there is a better chance it will still be within reach. Obviously my pocket is the best place to keep the phone secured but there are reasons that is not optimal either. Again, thanks for the replies.
