Question 2009 GX 470 Engine Noise

Should the engine sound this loud?? My friend has an 08 GX 470 and his engine doesn't sound nearly as this loud. My car almost sounds like a diesel truck. Should this be of a concerning issue, what could it be?

It sounds noisy, but not broken. When was the oil last changed and what grade was used?

You can buy a cheap mechanic's stethoscope from harbor freight or similar, and spend a few minutes touching it to things while the engine runs, could be a bad pulley bearing, could be an injector, who knows.

I used 5W-30. People have been telling that I should use a higher grade, like 10W-40?

Use the grade specified in your owner's manual (unless you live somewhere like Alaska).

If you don't have a manual, you can download one from the drivers.lexus.com website

Oil is something that people love to endlessly debate. The truth is you just need to use the correct grade, of an oil with the American Petroleum Institute (API) seal, from a good commercial brand. And change it on time. Using special oil, race oil, etc. is a waste of money.
