My temperature gauge will not work sometimes?

Sometimes it’s fine.

Anyone know if there are one or two temperature sending sensors on the engine?

Sometimes the engine light will come on because the computer thinks the engine is not up to temperature. It will throw a thermostat code. After a while the dash light goes out.

Any others thoughts?

 

I would check the engine area to see if you have any wires chewed on by mice/squirrels.
Here's the location for a 1999 2UZ-FE. On that year there were two senders - one for the instrument cluster and one for the ECU.
They're saying that other years may only have one.
