Default Mirror Motor failures

I am curious if I am the sole owner who has had the horizonal mirror adjustment fail on both left and right mirrors. Sort of glad for the extended warranty the wife insisted on buying because it covered it, but now I'm wondering if I need to be ready to replace the motors at some point in the future, and with the GS being discontinued, who knows when certain things will start popping up E coded.

So - BOTH left and right mirrors lost horizontal control. I'm also wondering if this isn't similar to the lock motor problem. Inevitable and can potentially be fixed very cheaply.

No issues with mirror motors yet. Car has 22k miles. What does E coded mean?

When parts are no longer available from Toyota/Lexus, they are E coded. As a Supra owner I am very familiar with this problem.

I have had my passenger side on my GS350 fail, was replaced under warranty. $1400 cost to the dealer, I paid nothing, they just replace the whole mirror. I had it set to tilt down so I could see the curb whenever I reversed , and I guess after so many years it just gave up. I no longer have it set to do that.

Hopefully it will take a while for the GS to be E-coded (TIL), since the IS500 and other Lexus seem to share some parts.

You're not the only one to have the problem. 16 gsf with almost 50k miles. Garaged. I found a thread on the gs350 forum claiming it can be fixed by taking apart the motor and cleaning off the corrosion with a brush. I'm about to try that and will update if it works.

That's a great thread. I took the part number from the motor, and you can get a brand new motor for less than $5 from a number of Internet retailers. Glad to know the motor isn't really toast inside, but it's a shame they don't seal them better to avoid the problem all together.

Weird. I couldn’t find any motors online from searching the numbers. I did however find a clublexus Russia post that seemed to be similar theme

This is a big help in understanding what we're looking at: https://www.mabuchi-motor.com/produc...ignations.html

This listing is also very helpful: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255800624865586.html

It would be interesting to see if there is an equivalent Vietnamese site since these motors are made in Vietnam.

This is unfortunate to hear. Just to be clear, is it the horizontal fold-in mechanism or mirror horizontal adjustment that has failed?

One time I was working on my side mirrors and had to turn it past its normal orientation. I didn't place the mirror back into its operating position, accidentally pressing the lock button and it tried folding the mirror in, making a spring snapping sound.
At this point, the mirror spun freely and i was worried the spring inside had popped something out of place.
I folded the mirrors in manually, turned the car on and used the folding feature button to reset the mirrors by itself, which fixed the issue.

These motors position the mirror vertically and horizontally. Both of my failures were horizontal motors. Vertical kept working fine. Lexus bought new mirrors under warranty for me, but I suspect they will fail again, so this motor info is really helpful.

I've never had an issue with the folding function.

On my 2013 gs350, the passenger side horizontal stopped working a few years back, driver side this year.

I pulled the mirror off, sprayed a ton on electrical contact lubricant wherever i could. then put the mirror back on. moved it back and forth for awhile. Then they started working again. Its like they were a bit seized (because the vertical moves everytime you put into reverse, it gets action, where horizontal does not... may be a good idea to make it move a bit to keep from freezing up?)

May not work for everyone, but its worth a shot. Even try just moving the mirror back and forth to see if that gets it moving.

Gonna order a few of these. Fingers crossed. MABUCHI FC-140SA DC 12V Car Door Lock Actuator Rearview Mirror Repair Motor | eBay

I took mine apart and swapped the motors, which caused the opposite action to stop working. After narrowing it down to the motor itself I took it apart and cleaned it with sandpaper and alcohol for the grease. Nothing changed so hopefully these shipped from china motors will work!
