Default Paint Peeling on Driver’s side Mirror

Just got home from playing golf in a rainstorm in Florida, so it was hard, then drove 5 miles and it was sunny. A little issue I noticed last week was that the a spot of paint on the driver’s side mirror bubbled up. Didn’t think too much about it, until Baam, you can see in the picture, I guess more paint was going to come off. It is like it is not longer sticking to the plastic underneath. And it looks like more will be coming off. So, I was thinking of buying a new pre-painted shell from Discounts Parts Monster for approx. $75, and just taking the old one off and slapping a new one on. However, does someone have a write up on how to remove the mirrors and taking them apart. I know Peasodos has done this, but it was probably five years ago. I don’t think I should try and paint it, or get it painted since the cost would be more if I had someone do it. Thanks all!

Removing that is easy, just 2 or 3 screws. U just need to be careful pulling out the glass and reinstalling it. It's held by 4 clips. Might wanna swap out to LED puddle lights while ur at it.

I used one of these kits on a number of spots on a car and with some areas it is almost invisible:

https://drcolorchip.com/touch-up-pai...mium-packages/

Or if you'd rather just use a spray can in a matching color, I have done that to good success. I don't remember what brand of can I used. You wouldn't have to remove the mirror if you didn't want to. Since the mirror is at a different angle and separated from the car, a slight difference in paint match won't be so noticable.

Is it difficult to take the door trim off to get to the screws/nuts? Probably not, just have not taken any trim off the vehicle yet. The mirror has to be taken off as well. Darn. What is the process for that? Guess I am not jamming a screwdriver behind there and prying it up. Almost wants me to do the Power auto-folding upgrade. Thanks all.

I replaced mine as it was cracked. Easier to buy prepainted.

That looks like the base surface was not prepped properly before being painted, which almost never happens from the factory. Has that mirror or other parts of the car been repainted?

The peeling mirror.
Honesty this does not look like the original factory paint on that mirror cover. I replaced my mirror cover and have taken my mirror apart 5-6 times for various mods.
Get the oem factory painted mirror cover, perfect match, and will not peel off like that. Do not use Dr Color Chip for this it's $45 plus shipping and will look like crap over that much peeled paint, your beyond a chip here buddy. Rest of that paint will probably peel off over time.

First you have to remove the mirror/glass. To do this move the mirror all the way to the inside, so you can stick you hand behind it, then pull, do NOT put any pressure directly on the front glass/mirror itself, just on the back side. Pull hard, it will pop off. Once you remove the mirror/glass there are 5-6 screws to remove, then the rest of the mirror comes apart, including the outer cover.

You don't remove any door panels or interior trims to change this outer mirror cover.

Yes. Agree that Dr. Colorchip is useless. Waste of money and it hardly matched the paint.

Even better not having to remove the mirror. Thanks everyone. Sounds like an easier fix than I thought it would be. Now that I inspect the paint on the shell, it looks like the old orange peel surface, so I don’t know if it was ever painted, but if it was, a crap job. And since no one else has ever brought this issue up before, I think Peasodos is probably correct, this is not a factory paint issue. I will order the outer shell this week. Maybe check the other mirror as well as I have noticed some “cracks” in the paint on the other mirror.

Good idea to have the new mirror wrapped with PPF. Mine is so there re no rock chips or other damage to the paint.

You don't remove the mirror base from the car, just what I said in my last post.

There are 5 screws. You don't remove the 3 silver screws on that white plastic piece.
