Default Temporary spare on AWD question

Last week, I got a nail in the front driver side tire near the shoulder (SW17LS's thread in Car Chat was contagious!). Nail was in there good and TPMS didn't show any air loss. I took it into Mavis and based on the location of the nail, they wouldn't let me drive out with the original tire since they didn't have the tire in stock. So they installed the donut spare and I thought nothing of it since I figured the tire would arrive in a day or two.

4 days later, tire is still not here since the initial order apparently didn't go through. Since my GS is AWD, will driving on the temporary spare for longer than I want cause any damage to the AWD drivetrain? To add insult to injury, the Mavis technician also bumped the drivers door on the lift while getting out, which caused a gash on the bottom edge. Another reason why I hate bringing my car for any type of service....

I think the differential will be able to handle it for a short time - figure you're not doing thousands of miles on the donut. Obviously, the donut is not meant to be driven for long distances or fast speeds - just enough to get your car to the closest service station or dealership.

If you need to drive the GS and have no other choice, it should be ok. Just take your time, with slow acceleration, more than enough room to brake and ease into turns. It would be faster to buy/receive a tire from TireRack with their 2 day shipping option!

Thanks for your input. TireRack certainly would have been faster had I known the shop would be so incompetent getting the order in! GS is the only car in the household so unfortunately we do rely on it daily. Definitely have been very deliberate in my driving with the donut on.

You are fine as long as you stay within the rated speed for the donut. It think it’s usually 50-60 mph but people obviously go faster than that. Donuts don’t have a lot of tread life so not meant to be driven for long periods of time. You should be fine if your only driving on it for several days, just make sure the psi is 60, they tend to loose air overtime.

Appreciate you all confirming. I finally got the new tire installed yesterday, though not after dealing with further incompetence on the shop's end. In any case, all is well now - now, onto deal with the paint chip and gash on the door...

sorry to hear about the gash on the door as a result of this endeavor, but glad the car is back on all fours so to speak!

what irritates me is when i see people using the donut for longer periods of time, at high rates of speed too...tsk tsk tsk!
