Has anyone attempted a drain/fill on the 8 speed transmission?

 

I would like to do the same thing on the 6-speed autobox. I happen to have a very precise refrigerant scale. Why couldn't the scale be reset with a drain pan on it. Then drain the transmission and note the "weight" of the old fluid. Then put back the same weight of new oil back in? Or do this same thing by volume. Put the same amount in as you took out should work. Agreed?

 

I never did it on a 4th Gen but I did it on my 2nd Gen and a couple Acura's.

It is pretty easy to drain and fill, you do it 3 times generally for each oil change. I just drained it in a old plastic jug that I have 2 of the same, I used a empty milk jug. I would mark where the old fluid was and then either dump the old fluid out and put new fluid to the same mark or duplicate the mark on a fresh jug and fill that up to the line and then put it in the car. Trying to match and read transmission fluid blind is a PIA, much more difficult then oil so it makes more sense to just measure how much you let out and then put the same amount back in. You may have to put the fluid back in the dipstick hole if you can't access the fill hole(happened on a car I did).

 

See the attachment (below) for an ATF Drain-and-Fill Calculator to help determine the percentage of clean fluid versus old fluid that remains after x number of drain-and-fills based on transmission fluid capacity and the amount of fluid replaced.

Just enter the 'Total ATF Capacity' of the transmission in Cell C5 and the 'Amount Replaced' in Cell C6 of the Excel spreadsheet.

Four or five successive drain-and-fills will replace 80% or so of the old ATF. The car should be driven at least 100 miles between each drain-and-fill.

Just helped a friend do a drain/fill on his 6 spd ('12 Camry) and it was pretty simple. With a cold engine, just measured what came out and refilled with fresh WS. Surprised at how little came out (1.5 qts). Hopefully the 8spd is just the same.

The whole process on my Sienna will take 11-12 qt until the new pink ATF come out. Basically I measure what ever came out and refill with the same amount plus extra 1/2 qt.

The fluid came out of my Sienna at 60K miles start turning to sludge and have bad smell. Your car will thank you for flushing it LIFETIME transmission fluid.

1.5 qt pan drain and fill doesn't help much since the transmission fluid capacity for most Toyota/Lexus is 8-12 qt.

My 2013 GS still less than 25K miles so haven't got a chance to do it. Probably will do the GS at 50K miles.
