The 2GR engines are very durable and are quite capable of handling more RPMs than what you had redlined in your encounter with the 335i.
The Lotus Evora/S/400 vehicles utilize the 2GR-FE version of our engine and can easily crank out 7200-7300 RPMs without any issues.
My IS350 has been tuned with a higher redline (7200RPM) for nearly half a year and so far I've had zero reliability issues, even after spending a full day on a road course.
Keep in mind as well that a redline limit is by design the lowest RPM deemed safe for all engines rolling off the production line. Every component has variation and tolerances.
Forgot to mention, Toyota is well known for over engineering just to make things reliable. Remember the Supra? 500hp twin turbo inline six. The bottom end was considered the weak link, so the engineers built it to withstand double that amount of horsepower. Fresh off the dealer lot, a bottom end that could handle 1,000 horsepower. Ponder that for a moment.
