Noob question about Messages on Nav Display

Noob question about Messages on Nav Display
I see some members saying they can see their phone messages displayed on their screen.
However, whenever I access the phone interface on the GS, the "Messages" box is greyed out, indicating that I cannot interact with it. Am I missing something in regards to settings and being able to access this feature?
All other desirable phone functions work...i.e. Bluetooth streaming audio/phone calls. My phone I am trying this is the iPhone 6. I also have a Galaxy Note that I have yet to attempt any connections with.

On your iPhone, you need to go into Settings > Bluetooth > blue i in circle next to Lexus GS > switch Show Notifications on.
