Default Rear Fender Protective Film

New member and first time Lexus owner here looking for some information and guidance on the rear fender film. What is this film designed to protect against? It does not seem to cover enough area to protect from rock chips. Also, can someone provide a part number or other alternatives to get this cleaned up? I am considering just removing the film as the dirt has gotten fairly deep under the film.

I don't get its purpose either, especially since it barely covers anything. It just a pain to clean around when I wash the car.

Typically the film is put where the car is more prone to rock chips coming from the tires. It is a pain, especially on a light colored car.

Thanks for the replies. I see that the rear fender flares out at this point, but I don't see the value as it does not cover any significant area.

I guess they are coming off.

Yeah, this was a big topic on the new generation IS. And like you plan to do, many folks chose to remove the film.

Thanks Moose,

I did read the IS forum and agree. It was a simple removal. Took my heat gun on low to warm the film and then peeled a corner. Once it started coming off it was very easy to remove. There a was a little caked on dirt that needed some work to remove, but I was happy with the end result.

I suspect it's there to protect from when people get in and out of the back seat....
