I think it's lexus' way to make sure you have both hands on the wheel

Also, I find the heated steering wheel warms up faster than the seats.

I picked up my FSport tonight and the delivery specialist specifically told me that only the sides get warm, not the top or bottom.

Does anyone with a 2014 and climate concierge know if the heated steering wheel comes on automatically as well? I'm still waiting on my car to arrive and I am getting the feeling like Lexus might have only half-a$$ed the system to where heated/ventilated seats automatically come on but I'll have to manually turn on and off the steering wheel. I'd like to have confirmation though.

I'm also still mad that I'll have to manually turn on Sport or Sport + modes each and every time I get in the car. What a poor way to design it. They should have had a dealer setting or somewhere in the menu for it to hold the current mode forever.

No clue on the climate concierge. As for the Sport and Sport S+ you can thank the EPA. The new rules for fuel economy rating state that the car has to be tested in the most aggressive ECU setting available that can be set to stay on permanently. So, thats why Eco will stay on after a restart, but not Sport or Sport S+. If they allowed it they would have had to let the EPA publish fuel economy figures in Sport/Sport S+.

Don't feel too bad, the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee DEFAULTS to Eco. Meaning if you don't want to drive it in Eco mode (which really sucks BTW) you have to defeat it after every restart. They did that so the EPA would publish fuel economy figures in Eco.

I doubt steering wheel heats automatically. Every one I've driven, you use to warm up the wheel and then turn off. A friend with medical issues leaves hers on. Seems like simple on/off switch non-mechanical switch.

Downside is probably can't leave it on so it comes on with Remote Start. I'm sure cycle ends with car being turned off. I will read the Owners Manual this weekend.

The 2014 added the auto feature to the seats, not the steering wheel.

I've started using the heated steering wheel now that it's gotten colder in North Texas. I think the steering wheel heats up quickly and gets plenty warm...but only at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock which I think is perfect!

The reason the Lexus GS steering wheel has its heating element at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock is for two very good reasons.

If the airbag in the steering wheel deploys you don't want your arms to block or interfere with it protecting you, which is likely if you typically drive with your hands on the steering wheel at [say] 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock or 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock.

The other reason is something you apparently have no experience or knowledge about. Putting your hands on the steering wheel at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock is the absolute best way to control any vehicle with the quickest driver reaction, whether going slowly or full-out at ragged 9/10 at over 200 mph.

You really should give the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock hand position an honest try - you'll probably learn to really like it.

Maybe you aren't aware that professional race car drivers always put their hands on the steering wheel at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position regardless of the type of car or the race class - Stock car, NASCAR, Touring car, Off-road, Formula, or Open wheel modified - when the driver is on full alert and 100% concentrating on driving their car - - unless you're Ken Block driving his highly modified 4-wheel drive Mustang wild on the streets of Los Angeles!

Climate concierge splits the hvac system to 3 zones. Driver front, passenger front, rear. In the infotainment you can set the 3 zones to different temperatures and the HVAC system will try to maintain that (either solely with heat/cool blending or with the fan too if using auto mode in semi, or if in full auto it'll adjust the vents used as well). You can also "trim" the heated seats to be typically "warmer" or "cooler" than what the programming is by default. Case-in-point my seat is set to max cooler but my passenger seat is set for 1 tick warmer for my wife. If you had heated rear seats, I guess it's got that too for the rear?

I have a Lux with the cold weather package (I've got electric heaters in my HVAC system to help the heater core), and my heated steering wheel is still a manual thing. I don't think the car will turn the rear defrost or the heated wheel back on if it was already on when you cycle power on the car. I'll try that after work tomorrow though.

Shame there's no 4g upgrade module out there yet for the GS. I'd really like to start my car with my phone and set all that remotely.

The reason I resurrected this thread is because someone asked me why the Lexus GS steering wheel is only heated at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock - so I did a search in the 4GS forum for 'heated steering wheel' and found this thread in which the OP complained about this very topic. So, I decided to respond, which I did - and I decided to offer additional context for people (that may not know) about where and why on the steering wheel your hands should be placed except when turning sharply at slow speed.

Now the two of you know why I resurrected this thread!

And, maybe it will help others become better informed, and to be better drivers...

To add a little bit of additional insight to this topic, I suspect many 4GS owners are unaware of how Lexus has ergonomically designed the 4GS steering wheel to perfectly place your hands on the steering wheel.

On the 4GS steering wheel there are two thumb lobes or thumb grips (see image below) - that if you place your thumbs on them, your hands are perfectly positioned. For those with a commonly bad habit, you should never hook your thumbs around the steering wheel...
