OEM remote unit has to be installed that way by orders of Toyota HQ..
After market remote can be set for the engine to shut down when touching the brake to shift like most units do..
At least that's how it was when I bought a Camry with after market remote start a few years ago...

I have a viper installed on mine, and it shuts off when you open the door. I didn't think it would be a pain but it is. You can't just get in and drive away, It's an extra step.
If you do get remote start be sure to turn off S-flow

Absolutely, and its not that way on our Jeep's factory remote start. If one wants remote start for a Lexus, I would go aftermarket.

The issue is that Lexus' system is terrible. The range is poor, its hard to know if you've activated it without looking at the car while pushing the buttons because the press sequence is complex, and when you walk up to the car and open the door, instead of getting in it all toasty warm...the car shuts off. In our Jeep it stays on, and you get in and press the start button and it cycles to full run mode.

Love the remote start in the Jeep, hate it in the Lexus.
Is there any possible way to disable it from shutting off when you open the door?

There is but the dealer won't install the remote starter without the engine shutoff.
Some kind of silly Toyota safety policy install.

Love my OEM remote start. Restarting the engine is absolutely not an issue.

I found the range on my dealer installed remote start to be significantly improved if you are on a higher floor than the car. from the second floor I can start it from about 300 ft.away but on the first floor I need a direct line of sight and its less than 150ft.

The option is $499 and is on the window sticker.

I have the aftermarket option on my Supra and my F-350 and I LOVE it. Not only does it stay on when you get in the car, but it will let you know its on by flashing your parking lights prior to start up and then leaving them on once its started...so if you are far away when you remote start it and you are unsure if it is on or not, the parking lights will illuminate and take the guess out of that.

I have a Clifford Avante Guard 5.x alarm on the truck and it works the same as the Viper on the Supra (same company- DEI Electronics). The remote start comes as part of their alarm package. You can also set the alarm to leave your engine running and lock the doors after you have exited the vehicle (almost like a turbo timer). The alarm runs anywhere from $500-700 installed depending on additional options (you can even remote start your car from another state with your smart phone with this damn thing!)

Just my $.02

1. You loose all the heat thats going or the cool air thats going which defeats the whole purpose of using the remote start. I want to sit down in a nice warm or nice cool running car...while every other remote start offered by every other manufacturer offers either OEM or aftermarket.

2. Multiple restarts are not good for the car. It wears on the starter, engine wear is higher on startup, and its not good to load another start off of the battery when the battery hasn't yet recharged from the initial start

Although the remote start is universally hated, I still want to get it since I'm fine with its shortcomings. For their who had it installed after the vehicle purchase, how much did it cost to install? Sewell has the RES on sale right now for $250 (which is not much of a discount considering it's like ~$270 with the CL discount, but I digress) and I was thinking of picking it up.
