Default E-Z Pass placement

Hey gang,

What is everybody doing with their E-Z Passes? On my ES I had it stuck on the driver's side of the mirror mount, behind the mirror in that dotted trim section. Pretty hidden and works well. In the GS though I don't see a real clear place to put it that won't be real obvious, don't want to block the humidity sensor...

I have Sunpass down here in fla and have mine on the right side of the mirror mount. It's pretty inconspicuous and hasn't given me any problem so far.

I put mine on the right side as well, but I have the suction cup (sunpass) because the sticker ones are a PITA to remove/never come off. Plus, if I ever want/need to remove it I can. I can't recall of ez-pass has that option, I'm sure they do.

I didn't even install it - just letting the toll booths scan my license plate and figure it out

Thats actually not a bad idea, any issues with that so far jj?

They have a new smaller EZPass now, I was going to call MD and see if they offer it

You have to pay every ticket individually..do you really want to mail in a check for a $1.25 every time? Unless you use tolls sparingly, that's the only way it'd make sense to not have one.

I think what he's saying is he has an EZ Pass account but just doesn't use the transponder. Supposedly if you have an account and your license plate linked, if it doesn't read the transponder it reads the plate number and simply charges your EZPass account as if you did have a transponder...

That's correct. At least here in TX, the NTTA has cameras that record the license plate of each vehicle that goes thru' the toll booth. (just in case they aren't able to read the tolltag).

If the license plate is present in their system (I have my car's license plate and transponder# listed on my account), they just bill it directly.
If it isn't present in their system (driver doesn't have a tolltag with ntta), they send a bill and owner has to pay by mail (slightly higher charge in some cases).

<I don't know whether this will work in other states>

@SW10ES, the only issue so far has been at the airport - DFW airport doesn't have these cameras - all vehicles have to stop anyway (gated entry). So, I just take the transponder out of the center console and wave it at the overhead reader.

I didn't like how that transponder sticks out in the car.

Edit: For MD, you may have a problem
https://www.ezpassmd.com/en/about/terms_ind.shtml - "Transactions in which the transponder is not read may result in a higher toll rate being deducted from your Account."
Ick - that's not good. The transponder is not under your control. If it fails for whatever reason, why should the driver be responsible for additional charges?

Yeah the problem I think is the new roads with progressive tolls like the ICC in MD and the 495 Express lanes in NOVA. They bill you all along the route...

I just looked at it and it looks like it would hide pretty well. There is a new smaller EZPass tag I'm going to call MD and see if I can get

I've heard of people plasti-dipping the suction cup ones, which i would have figured it messes with the signal but I guess not?

Hi Steve, as long as your plate is registered on the EZ pass website, it will charge the account even without using the transponder. I added my dad's car so he could use 200 and i haven't had any problems. One clarification though, I have mine through VA as year's ago I had to use SmartTag for the Dulles Toll Road and they later converted it to EZ Pass. I would just call MD EZ Pass to make sure.
