Default Q: What is wrong with the new headrest?

I sat in a 2013 GS350 last weekend at the dealership and found the headrest to be incredibly uncomfortable. I cannot lean back in the seat without the headrest trying to bend my head downward. For anyone who owns this car, please explain what am I missing. Thanks.

I think you'll find this in many cars sold today. It's about whiplash protection.

Yup, I have noticed a ton of cars with very similar designs. And PB is totally right, they are not made for you to rest your head on at all, they are made so you have some protection against whiplash.

Its adjustable. Push it all the way forward and it will release further back.

When you're older and a bit hunched, they fit just right.

But yes, federal requirements mandated the change to be phased in for all cars introduced / redesigned after about 2005 or 2006. Almost every car forum has complaints about this.

I got used to the slight pressure on the back of the neck, although the most intrusive was my Mercedes, the least, was in the Porsche. It is a mandated safety feature to prevent/limit whiplash.

In normal operation of the vehicle I never touch the headrest. I did, however, install some very nice sheepskin headrest covers in case I do use the headrest while stopped. Also, as mentioned earlier, the headrest does move forward and back.

It's probably because someone pushed the headrest far forward. It's a 3 position ratchet style setting which is new to the 4th Generation GS. Just keep pushing the headrest forward to go back to its standard setting.
