Perhaps, the smog sensor is playing a trick on you. If this is your first Lexus, you should know that the GS has a smog sensor and it will switch from outside to recir when it detects smog. Then switch back to outside once the smog level is dropped in the air cabin. This usually happens when you are driving closely behind another car.

Don't know about the GS because I'm waiting for it but the sensitivity on the smog sensor was adjustable on my LS. If its set too sensititive it will stay on recirculate all the time. My LS was user adjustable.

GS too is adjustable.
