Default Rear blinds / shades

Anyone know how to keep the rear blinds up when you put the car in reverse. I like to disable the auto down feature and only manually control the rear blinds / shades with the control button.

It’s a setting the dealer can change, which is where I had it done. It might also be possible to do it yourself with apps like Carista but I’m not certain.

I don't think the Carista OBD2 tool can be used to change the rear sunshade from not going down in reverse for a Lexus GS 350.

@gripau1 - Why do you want the Power Rear Shade to remain up (for shade) when in reverse, making it more difficult to see when backing up?

I personally like the default operation for my Rear Shade, which lowers in reverse for better visibility when backing up, and goes up when in Drive in 0.7 seconds.

By default the rear shade does remain down (no shade for better view) when in reverse, and only goes up (for shade) after a few seconds passes when in Drive. But, you can control the rear shade to remain down (no shade) all the time if you prefer with the control button in the console. It appears you already have manual control of the rear shade whenever you desire except for when backing up in reverse - you want the shade to remain up for shade.

I'm curious, can you explain why you prefer the shade to remain up when backing up in reverse, which is always just a very brief period of time?

I was able to change this option on my 2014 using Carista.

I think it makes sense to disable the rear shade in reverse to cut down wear and tear on the mechanism if that feature isn't important to you.

The track and motor for it are surely complicated and expensive to fix. No reason to put it through the extra half dozen extra cycles a day when it could be seeing basically zero.

I was unaware the Carista tool could disable the Power Rear Shade from going down in reverse.

I refuse to not use a feature in an effort to save it from wearing out... If some feature wears out or stops working I'll either get it fixed, or get rid of the car...

I suspect the Power Rear Shade has been tested by Lexus/Toyota to last many thousands of up/down cycles.

Of course it was cycle tested. Along with our door lock actuators and HVAC blend door servos and there are plenty of failures on those.

There are enough rear shade failures and issues reported on here for me to make disabling it a real easy decision! I rarely use the shade, and when I do the auto up and down was more of an annoyance than anything.

I can also confirm that Carista can change this setting. It is the main reason I purchased one after buying the car. However, you do need to have an active subscription to make changes to that setting. You may get a free trial period when you purchase the Carista OBD2 tool. I did, but that was a few years ago. If not, just purchase a single months subscription and make all your changes during that time period. Good luck!

@alxhastngs - Maybe you should just get rid of the car! Then all the things that scare you about owning it and your complaints will be history...

When I reverse park my car in the morning, I have to move back and forth several times to get it lined up properly because the parking spot is pretty tight. The rear sunshade automatically goes up and down multiple times as I switch between reverse and drive. On top of that, the sun shines directly through the back window and reflect to the rearview mirror, making it hard to see since it takes my eyes a bit to adjust to the sun glare.

Got it! Be careful!

People don't realize that most ultra low speed accidents happen when backing up in reverse gear. (Backing into: garage walls/door jambs, light pole bases, sign posts, other vehicles, gas pump protection bollards, high concrete curbs or parking lot stop blocks, planter containers, trees, etc., etc.)

For that reason, I avoid backing up as much as possible, which makes having an accident when backing up preventable...
