Hello Lexus family this is my first time doing a post so please everyone help if you can. I purchase my first 2006 GS300 Lexus with high mileage. After putting on 25k to 30k miles I did start to get the trouble code that my catalytic converter is bad. They are showing the 402 and 401 codes along with the O2 sensor codes as well. I was told.. I'm assuming that it's never been changed now that I'm pushing 200k. Went to my local parts store tried the 3 most famous and that Catalytic converter is going for $750 to $800 a piece. some people say that I need to purchase that item on RockAuto to get a cheaper price which I did see less than $400 a piece. they say that I have 4 O2 sensors that I need to replace when doing this job they say I should replace too. I've been checking around and people have been telling me that the labor calls on something like this is between $300 to $400 a side. Is this correct is this what it's going to cost me to get my Lexus running right or is this guy just trying to take me to the bank. If anyone can help with the purchasing of these items somewhere that would be reasonable and let me know what the standard calls for something to repair this would run I would greatly appreciate it. I like my new Lexus it runs great but you know money is tight doing the covid-19 but I really like to turn around and get this done reasonable so if you guys can help me please by all means let me know
Catalytic's dont go bad on there own, as they are pretty tough and can with stand a lot. You may have an issue with some unburnt fuel, this is a catalytic killer. When was the last time you replaced the spark plugs (oem or denso, and not fakes), and performed a top engine cleaning with seafoam through the intake manifold, also throttle body cleaning, and maf sensor. I wouldnt want to see you put new catalytic on and fry them in little time. So I would look into those things.
I dont like aftermarket catalytic as many are from china and are poor quality. If you can find youself a used set with low miles I think that will be better, and last longer. Also theres no need to replace the o2 sensors aslong as they are fine, I wouldnt mess with them. I wouldnt fix anything that isnt broken. But if there was something I would replace ahead, is the water pump. That the weak point on our cars, and after 90k miles they fail, and when they do they can easily destroy an engine
